"Akatsuki" is an unusual word in Japanese. On the surface it would seem to mean "red moon," which would be written 赤月. But the word actually means "daybreak," and is written with one kanji, 暁, a simplified version of the old Chinese hanzi 曉, a sun on the left arising to shine on the three earths on a tray.

The choice of the name might also have been a play on 暁星 "gyousei" or "morning star," which Venus often is, of course.

Venus just went through superior conjunction yesterday—so it just stopped being a morning star and became an evening star (but it won’t be visible after sunset until it’s further from the sun in the sky).
