The mother of the boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure has said that "accidents happen" on a Facebook post hitting out at critics.
The endangered animal was shot dead by zoo staff to protect the four-year-old after it began dragging him around.
Michelle Gregg has faced criticism for social media users and animal rights campaigners, who claim she should have been keeping a closer eye on her child.
Some animal lovers even suggested she should have been shot and killed instead of the gorilla Harambe.
Responding to the criticism on Facebook, she said: "I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers today. What started off as a wonderful day turned into a scary one.
"For those of you that have seen the news or been on social media that was my son that fell in the gorilla exhibit at the zoo. God protected my child until the authorities were able to get to him.

There is no telling what the gorilla would have felt or thought. Killing it was the right call, but tragic, nonetheless.
Really, you think they should be more ready to shoot the animals?! Wow. Sorry but you’re scum and I will no longer have anything to do with you. You make me sick. Goodbye, further replies from you will be ignored, as I don’t deal with filth.
There’s more options than that. And they had the time to take them.
See how hard the gorilla jerked the kid around.

It is the mother’s fault.
Stay away from women who own two things: lots of dried flowers and lots of cats.
I speak as an owner of a cat and dog. Not only will that cat not care for me in old age, she looks out every day for ways to murder me. The dog, not so much, but what good is she when it comes down to brass tacks?
That gorilla was about to kill that little boy. The zoo did what they should have done.
I’m sure that very little boy has contusions and serious bruising. I wouldn’t be surprised if his arm wasn’t torn out of its socket.
I’m not blaming anyone. Children move quickly. All the mother had to do was turn her head.
Gorillas may be protected species but they are not protected under hate speech. And I hate gorillas!
No, but you’re free to try to prove my statement wrong.
Maybe overseas in the fighting for us. I don’t know but everyone is so quick to judge.
I’m so sick of this goddam gorilla I could spit. I remember how tired I was of that stupid lion who was killed by some dentist. I mean, in this country alone, we are murdering millions of children in the womb, Chicago is murdering men, women and children as we speak and this is what we get upset about??!
.
Absolutely Ditter.
Gorillas are often given novel items to keep them from being bored. These items often contain treats. These items are often slammed around a great deal as the gorillas explore their characteristics and figure out how to obtain the treats.
It is unlikely that the gorilla saw this child as anything other than a novel item and was quite surprised and agitated by the loud reaction of the crowd. Stop anthropomorphizing, the child was in serious danger.
Reporters are supposed to report the truth. In this case, many are not doing so.
If you choose to believe those who are not reporting the truth, you will draw faulty conclusions, and you have.
Thank God for a voice of reason.
Having seen how some parents allow their children to run wild - in restaurants, department stores, Toys R Us - I doubt she was blameless.
I've seen too many kids running around endangering themselves and others, not to mention irritating the heck out of others.
