Yep, all should not be lumped into one group.
Including us Texans.

Humblegunner is a first-class asshole. He never has an original thought and only sticks around to berate people on this site. He is the only reason I have not started to donate to this site again after being unemployed for so long. He only stays around because he’s a friend of Jim’s. I figure if Jim keeps guys like this close he needs no more money from me. If I get banned for saying this after 14 years, so be it. Humblegunner is a first-class jerk who adds nothing to the discourse on this site.

Look at it as battle pay. Public school teachers are doing the baby sitting/baby raising job that American parents will not do. What do
you pay for a baby sitter these days? $10/hr? If so, multiply that by 90-100 (# of students baby sat). So, the average teacher ought to earn around $900-$1000/day (that's for an average class of 1 hour in duration). That's $5000/wk. That's $200,000/year (for a 40 week year). Next, factor in that there is the likelihood that these "babysitters" are supposed to do something on the order of academic preparation (whereas, the average babysitter is just watching the kids, keeping them from destroying the home, following a bedtime schedule, etc.) and you are talking about providing a training program (results notwithstanding - the program is provided by the average teacher. By the way, for the average school urchin, it is this very program that brings out the violent resistance. If they were simply allowed to stay on their cellphones all day, engage in social banter, conduct small-scale drug transactions/secret bathroom rendezvous, etc., the violent outbursts would probably be at a minimum...as long as lunch was a happy meal, a hot pocket or some other sumptuous fare). Technically then, the average teacher is grossly underpaid. They make it up on the back end.
Sarcasm, sure...but not by much.

I don’t know why anybody goes into the teaching profession any longer. Yeah, I get that “it’s for the chirrun”; but it just no longer seems worthwhile to me. I think of that poor young woman teacher raped by one of Obama’s sons and stabbed to death and left in the woods. It’s probably no more dangerous to serve in the military than teach inner-city ferals.

NY and CA have ridiculously high teacher pensions. CA’s is almost bankrupt and the state will force taxpayers to bail it out.
My son had teachers that had no business ‘teaching’ - one came in hangover, another couldn’t talk about his assignment at lunch because she had to clean out her desk and told him to come back after school. After school she beat all the kids to the parking lot and was nowhere to be found.
I taught for one semester, then realized I didn’t want to waste my life doing something ineffective just for the money.
