Saudi Claims He Invented e-Commerce, Intends to Sue Firms Which Use It

A Saudi man who claims he invented the concept of e-commerce during the early days of the internet says that he is talks with big firms who wish to avoid litigation for stealing his world-changing idea.

“There are now undergoing negotiations with big companies inside [the kingdom] and abroad to find a solution without opting to head to international judiciary,” Faisal bin Fahd al-Osaimi told the local Saudi daily Okaz.

Osaimi said he presented the concept of e-commerce to the late King Fahd in 1991, the same year the internet was born.

The late king reportedly referred him to the trade ministry and the King Abdul Aziz City of Technology, a scientific organization. But Osaimi says he did not get any feedback from them.

When asked why he kept quiet all this years over what he alleges to be his world-changing idea, he said: “I previously made several press interviews but I think that it is the time now for me to appear stronger than before.”

If his claims are accepted, Osaimi could be eligible for massive royalties.

The brainchild of British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee – the internet became available to the public in August 1991.

A quarter of a century later, e-commerce websites, including Amazon, Alibaba, and Ebay, lead a multi-trillion dollar industry.

Not privy to say, but I’ll bet he was in e-commerce long before the House of Saud. ;^)

thanks. you are right.

I’m still trying to figure out the 1991 date. Nothing seems to fit.

I suppose very limited e-commerce could have gone back to Comp-u-Serve in 1984.

Still, e-commerce didn’t become near mainstream until WWW - 1995-ish.

There are no Smith and Wesson designed guns bought in bulk by the US government for the Civil War because they owned the patent on the rear loading design, but refused to make them in .44 and .45 until the government bought the thousands of .32 caliber guns they had been awarded in their patent suit. So, the Civil War was fought with front loading pistols. (Lots of people carried the smaller caliber guns but the government didn’t buy them.)

Pierce Arrow owned a patent on headlights in the fender of cars, so competitor cars continued to use the bullet-on-the-fender design until Peirce Arrow went into bankruptcy in 1938. In 1939 cars that were in the refresh cycle mostly had headlights in their fenders.

A man owned the patent on internal combustion engines and required a substantial payment for each use, which added substantially to the cost of cars. Ford took him to court and eventually won. Had Ford lost there would have been a lot fewer cars and even fewer cheap ones.

The point is, patents and the courts can change history.

I believe Dr. Taylor may have had a little bit to do with it, especially after he left ARPA and went to PARC.

“the only Muslim invention of the past 25 years is suicide bombing.”

Well, Muslims did invent the first condom by utilizing the lower intestine of a goat. But then the British quickly improved on the idea by removing the intestine from the goat first.
