I've had very short hair most of my life, and the only thing people ever call me is, "Ma'am." Nobody's given me any flack over it since elementary school.
I think this lady is telling us a fictional story.

I am mystified too. I have had very short hair (think Judith Dench style) for 25yrs. I have only ever gotten compliments and/or requests for the name of my hair stylist.
I have never been called names or been mistaken for a man. I also live in levis and t-shirts.
Lots of people jumping on the victim wagon.
