You have to distinguish between places where socialism is imposed by outside forces and where it is home grown.
In the case of North Korea, Truman started the whole mess by allowing Russia to take over the area north of the 38th parallel and then China stuck their fingers in. This was after Japan left Korea in ruins with their thirty some years of occupation.
If you really want to be a bit rough on someone, North Korea owes its continuing existence to Charles Willoughby who dismissed the intelligence that the Chinese army was entering the Korean war.
North Korea is China's lapdog, when they tell him Bow-Wow he says Arf.
