The Mayans were dying out before the Spanish arrived.

The reason one knows about Spanish atrocities was because missionaries documented them to Spain. This was not true in other countries, e.g. the genocides of the Japanese invasion of Korea about the same time.

it was disease, not the Spanish, who decimated the Indians.
