Or a liberal democrat. The last run of Iron Man I purchased and read ran from 1998 to 2005. In the last year, Tony Stark went to work for the Bush administration in a cabinet position. I think it may have been Defense. And there's the fifty-plus years of stories showing Stark being the ultimate capitalist and unabashedly enjoying his wealth and defending his intellectual property.
I guess Mr. Downey did not research the source material for his character.

Too bad some of the idiots here can't separate fantasy from reality. He was asked about Tony Stark (not a real person folks), not about himself.
To his credit he keeps his politics to himself but all indications, at least according to articles I found on Google, show him to be a conservative.......
