You can google pictures of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Monkees in the 1960s on sofas or couches all sitting what we'd consider creepily close to each other and not really thinking anything of it.
I’ll give Cruz for one thing (and that will be it forever). I always thought his cowboy boots were a phony prop for the election. He’s wearing them way back then, though. That said:
