TUPELO, Miss. (ChurchMilitant.com) - A petition calling for a nationwide boycott of Target has broken 1 million signatures.
Organized by pro-family non-profit the American Family Association (AFA), the petition comes in response to an announcement last week from the retail giant in which the company stated it would allow "transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity."
"Inclusivity is a core belief at Target," the post reads. "It's something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day."
The short announcement concludes by asserting "[e]veryone deserves to feel like they belong."
The statement has been met with much backlash from various organizations, including the AFA, which maintains that policies like the one implemented by Target are "exactly how sexual predators get access to their victims."
"Clearly, Target's dangerous new policy poses a danger to wives and daughters," the AFA notes. "We think many customers will agree. And we think the average Target customer is willing to pledge to boycott Target stores until it makes protecting women and children a priority."
The petition was launched shortly after news had broken of Target's announcement and has since garnered a little over 1 million signatories who pledge to "shop elsewhere" until "Target makes the safety of women and children a priority."
The organization cites examples from across the country of what they claim Target's policy can lead to, including multiple cross-dressing men arrested in various states for filming inside of women's restrooms and locker rooms.
Despite the recent surge in pro-transgender initiatives sweeping the country's schools and stores, several studies indicate the percentage of Americans who identify as transgender to be well below 1 percent, with a 2011 paper by the Williams Institute estimating the number at around 700,000 adult Americans or 0.3 percent of the population. According to the 2010 census, around 22,000 had legally changed their sex, and only a little over 135,000 have legally changed their name to one of the opposite gender since the formation of the Social Security Administration in 1936.
The Census Bureau does not currently track gender identity and, despite pushes for the collection of data on transgender individuals to improve statistics, the agency asserts it has no plans to include such information in the 2020 census.
Great! So how about not keeping it to yourself and using it as nothing more than personal defense?
Not much point in keeping this going.
You are clearly just throwing out nonsense to try and confuse the issue.
You have been refuted time and again. Instead of acknowledging it and trying to understand, you just throw out more garbage, and garbage is what it is.
At first I just wondered how anyone could be so stupid but now I see that you are just spewing nonsense and you have to know it is nonsense.
Frankly, many nights if someone wanted to use a ladder to get into one of my windows they probably could, with an easily pushed out screen and the window open for air. I choose a mix of convenience and caution as befits the situation.
The height of outrage is really odd. The older way of treating this wouldn’t be a self righteous boycott, but “we avoid this dangerous place but never cut it off entirely.” This allows the place some leeway to improve its approach to increase its clientele.
I’m seeing people chesty thump that they will NEVER EVER forgive Target. I didn’t say excuse, I said forgive. This is a dangerous precedent to set. Who is always without sin? God will cause unforgiveness to come upon the unforgiving. I can’t change that, I didn’t set God’s policy, I only read it from the bible.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. I agree with what you say.
I have not been refuted. I have pointed out moderating principles that God Himself has established and your raging and lying cannot disestablish. I am sorry you won’t take the warning.
For all those having trouble seeing the light of Truth, wherever and however the circumstance, including myself, I’m going to pray for Wisdom, strength, mercy, healing and guidance for His Glory.
So far 1,090,658 have signed the petition! That’s tens of thousands more than last night. Target struck a nerve.
I believe the good Lord certainly wants concern, but not brittleness.
Maybe society is weak. Maybe this is the only way it now has power to show its mounting displeasure.
But the result is that Target is now the target (divine pun?) of all the outrage, and that in such a way that it won’t ever reach to populations where it would do a lot more good.
Do we really think Walmart will keep its bathrooms rape-proof by not explicitly announcing something like Target did? Target only made explicit what was already implicit. They committed a sin of honesty, in one sense.
May the people begin to realize that if they do not get right with God in far more fundamental ways, and that doesn’t mean presuming to turn all society into a Christian club, God won’t prosper them otherwise as well. You can be right but dead right, as they used to teach us in driving class.
Will it ever go to anything past this? I have yet to see a reason to sign it personally.
Have we ever stopped to think why it was that God wanted men to live as men, and women to live as women, and to either be chaste or to marry?
There is a whole dimension of love at stake. To nurture, to care. The most manly man is not the Napoleon figure, the macho, the ever ready to shoot rather than walk the extra mile. The most womanly woman watches how she directs her charms rather than broadcasting them to the public to get the ego trip of ogling. We can’t know all of what God intended of course, but we can know many of its broad outlines.
I see the hallmarks of a society, even a “Christian” one, turned selfish until the results have crashed in on it, and now it is suddenly taking drastic action — in one place. But the walls need to be rebuilt all over.
I look at the step-function response to THIS situation and marvel that you have been so stuck in the mud before.
We are a quick easy internet sitting society and do things that are condign.
If you actually read what I say, I leave them if I am there to attend them.
Why are you not there to attend your young-uns? That points a finger of damnation back at you.

Well I shouldn’t say damnation, I should say accusation. However when the temper of the discussion turns to damnation, as it did with you, then do not be surprised if damnation comes back.
Not sure what the ultimate result of the boycott will be. It reminds me of J.C.Penney and the situation they created for themselves. I find it interesting to watch and see what happens. My personal opinion is that people feel powerless and joining the boycott makes them feel better as they feel they’re acting on their beliefs. No doubt, too, AFA is going to get lots of new members out of this
I don’t disagree with anything you did there, either.
Well said, HTR.
We need to venture (hey, there’s another store, Venture, but it went out of business — could the mark be revived?) into areas where we are going to do more than chesty thump about our ostensible virtue in convenient forums. What does it cost any of us? What happens except a sense of feeling elated at a quintessentially scapegoat move? What of the people who worked or will have worked at Target, why are we blithely telling them to go to hell when they were not even to blame? Especially those of us who will not even forgive if the management gets another idea? If the management knows it won’t be forgiven, then it has a powerful incentive to try to embrace the lefty market to the maximum.
Selfishness. We fight fires rather than working tirelessly to clean up the flammable clutter. Some of which we ourselves have been contributing to.
