To: Don Hernando de Las Casas

From all I’ve read and seen both professionally and personally, I believe the biggest contributing factor is upbringing-nurture rather than nature-culture has a bit to do with it, but not much unless the people choose not to assimilate-think muslims and their “culture” with its condemnation and avoidance of all non-muslim culture and belief-and my parents always told me that in 50 years we would have LBJ’s programs to thank in large part for the breakdown of society-they were right...

My ancestry is Hispanic/Latino, but most of those ancestors had come to what is now Texas before 1800-I’d say we are assimilated-we have a few cultural specifics, but we are just ordinary Americans, even to learning Spanish as a second language in childhood-that is common to W/SW border area Texans of all ethnicities and colors...
