Tesla Motors Inc.’s unveiling of its new electric vehicle yesterday had the marks of an iPhone release—long lines of enthusiastic consumers, a glossy product and a CEO presenting in a simple black shirt.

Little new information came out about the Model 3, but with the car’s comparably more affordable $35,000 price tag and 215-mile range, Tesla is making a bid to become a mass-market auto manufacturer.

I’ve often thought that the uproar over the Ford Pinto was contrived, it had to be taken down because the GM equivalent Vega was such a piece of junk. The Vega was the better-looking of the two but rusted out rapidly and the aluminum block 4 cylinder was not ready for the real world, to put it politely.

I looked at a cost list recently. It seems 12.5 was the mean and 37 to 52 was the top 10%. I can’t imagine paying 37 cents. We have natural gas so that helps, but summer time bills can already hit $400.

"215 mile range? Really?"

My Wrangler Rubicon only gets a little over 300 miles on a full tank...of course for that trade off, I get some distinct capabilities. It's rated to ford up to 30" of water, which I somehow doubt this Tesla can do :-) And at the end of that 300 miles, it only takes me a few minutes to top off the tank, and I'm ready to go again.

So what? Apparently you have not purchased a Tesla. Neither have I. So no skin off our backs, right?

I say let the early adopters adopt and work out the bugs. Once the products is ready for prime time, perhaps then I will consider purchasing one. In the meantime, I'm not going to bash the company for trying a new technology and I'm not going to bash those who want to be early adopters of electric cars. In fact, I'm thankful for them. Better them than me.

This is all about control. Nothing government does is anything BUT control.
Bingo. Next version will be a ... oops, there won't be a next one.
They'll all be banned and we'll all be forced into the ghettos.

I haven’t heard anyone here question his innovation abilities. However, I hate to break it to you, but this isn’t one of his best ventures. In fact in it’s history, Tesla as a company has been in the red.

...

People who specialize in investing and who’ve made a lot of money at it, disagree. However, there is no such thing as a sure thing. I’d say that Tesla has a better than average chance of being a long term successful company. When I see people here on FR throwing rocks at Tesla from the comfort of their computer chairs I can see that they aren’t considering all the factors in favor of Tesla now and especially in the future.

My biggest concern with Tesla would be their financial condition if there’s a big economic downturn. But one must take risks if one is to succeed.

Of course, none of the cars you listed will do 0-60 in less than six seconds either, eh?

I can't think of anyplace I would need to get to so quickly, that a delay of a few seconds would matter all that much.

” least thirty years, at which point low-cost nuclear, solar and possbily LENR “

LENR is a silly joke on the ignorant and played out by scam artists like Rossi. No nuclear plants are in the work and I highly doubt any will be built in the next 30 years. Solar has hit chemical limits and no new discoveries are expected.

I’ve often thought that the uproar over the Ford Pinto was contrived,

I lived in that era too, and knew people with Pintos. None ever blew up, and at least one I can remember had a rear end collision.

This was just a Ralph Nader (get my publicity) stunt, as it was later found that the Pinto had no more addional risk as any other small car of that era.

Perceptions are a B____ I tell ya.

“So no skin off our backs, right? “

Not entirely. You pay the taxes they get as tax breaks.

Let us know when they go online. Politics has a mean way of killing nuclear projects.

I had a girlfriend who had one, light blue 72 model with the glass hatch, all the options. It wasn’t a bad car, I don’t recall it ever breaking down. The biggest negative I could come up with would be that the a/c really taxed the little 4 cylinder engine with automatic, was it ever slow with the air on. The air worked great, though.

I do a lot of investing, and a some in the VC area. The deal with Musk, is that probably 75% of VC is directed toward his entire portfolio. With the dogs, comes the potential of a home run. (Like SpaceX which is a selectively private venture). I am sure Elon Musk coaxes his investor pool to look at his entire product, rather than pick and choose. Those in that inner-circle get the early scoop, and can formulate investment accordingly.

Believe me those who have been allowed to in that inner circle of SpaceX are going to be incredibly wealthy some day.

There is no savings to an electric car except that that comes out of the pockets of other taxpayers. What happens if the gaia worshippers get their dream of all vehicles being electric? Where doe the infrastructure come from for all the charging stations? Not everyone lives in a house where they can plug them in, what about all the extra electrical capacity? BFD a vehicle that can go from 0-60 in less than six seconds, where are you going to do it? here in California you can’t even get people to do the speed limit and the roads are packed.

Is this model also going to have “free” charges with the Tesla network of charging stations?

Their website says supercharger capable. I suspect for the lower priced models, it will be an option. They did the same for some of the earlier S class models with the 60KWH battery. It was $2K to enable it through software. If they want to use the public level 3 quick charge stations the adapter is another $2K.

Perhaps you should try reading about what you comment on before posting nonsense about non-issues.

First, the battery swap was mainly just a scam to bilk California taxpayers out of $500 for every Tesla car produced, and will be discontinued soon as that subsidy has been axed. http://nlpc.org/stories/2014/06/30/tesla-enthusiasm-battery-swap-wanes-after-subsidies-disappear

The swap station has apparently only ever been used by five customers. http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/hybrid-electric/a15962/elon-musk-tesla-battery-swap/

However, there never was nor will there ever be any danger of your faulty battery swap theory taking place even if the swap system is revived and scaled up. Tesla is swapping certified batteries, and either reinstalling the old battery on the customer’s return or charging the customer for shipping the user’s battery back to the customer’s nearest dealer to reinstall. The batteries are loaners, not replacements. http://www.forbes.com/sites/markrogowsky/2013/06/21/tesla-90-second-battery-swap-tech-coming-this-year/#7a2079ba7dc5

So apparently you weren’t smarter than Elon Musk and his entire team of engineers and accountants after all.
