Tesla Motors Inc.’s unveiling of its new electric vehicle yesterday had the marks of an iPhone release—long lines of enthusiastic consumers, a glossy product and a CEO presenting in a simple black shirt.

Little new information came out about the Model 3, but with the car’s comparably more affordable $35,000 price tag and 215-mile range, Tesla is making a bid to become a mass-market auto manufacturer.

Depletion does matter, if you to park the car for a few hours and cant plug it in. I will have 99.999% of the gas left when I park my car. But I might have no power in the battery, if left unplugged for the same amount of time if it’s cold.

Yes, it’s true people can travel far if they can plug in their cars every couple hundred kilometres.

It would only take me 2 days to go to Jasper, Alberta, instead of 3 1/2 hours.

“Factor in the cost of a car in the first place. That $35,000 car will give me the same functionality of a gas car for about $10,000 more, not including the taxpayer rebate. Even factoring in greater gas cost, though the increase in electrical costs isn’t being factored as more people buy electrical cars, that $2/day greater costs is about 5,000 days of driving before the gas car starts to become more expensive to drive.”

You’re making an awful lot of assumptions there. Many folks equate the Tesla brand with BMW and other high-end lines. The least expensive BMW 3-series sedan is right at the same price point, accelerates around as fast...and is much more expensive in terms of fuel.

“That’s almost 15 years of driving. It’s even greater when you count how cheap a quality used car is.”

I suspect used Teslas will also be available...

Used Teslas will be cheap, until it becomes time to replace the battery. Then it will be a sudden $10,000 expense. I can replace the engine of a gas car for about $3,000.

If you lived in California your tax money would be going to Tesla for battery swap stations they lied about setting up. AKA a rip off. 86 million dollars on up. We could have very cheap oil for more than a decade which makes electric automobiles ridiculous.

So buy a Tesla. It’s just not my cup of tea.

Why all the hostility towards this car?

Because this car is generally seen as the embodiment of the greenie waste on electric cars: $7500 taxpayer funded rebates per car, $50Mil+ of its revenue comes from selling CA's carbon credits scheme, etc. The company wouldn't have survived on its own, without all the government propping it up.

Tesla says Model 3 orders top $10 billion in first 36 hours

Sunday, April 3rd

By Paul Lienert

DETROIT (Reuters) – Tesla Motors Inc said orders for its new Model 3 electric sedan topped 253,000 in the first 36 hours — a fast start for the company’s first mass-market vehicle, which may not begin to reach customers for another 18 months or more.
