Long Island (pronounced lawn geye-land) upstate?
For many people living in Greenwich Village, upstate is anything above 14th Street.
Sure we do: It’s where cidiots aren’t from.
Why, it’s above “down state” New York of course.
I know where ‘Up State New York’ is, I’ve been there, actually it’s quite pretty up there...

Pretty much the way I have always seen it, and from the way NY state residents portray it that hate being lumped in with the sewer dwellers of NYC.

Actually isn’t there that famous New Yorker cartoon that had New York City, and then anything across the Hudson was “somewhere else”?
My rule of thumb is that it is upstate if they have lost a quarter or more of their population in the last fifty years.

I’m from Buffalo so...
Upstate NY is anything north of I-90, and east of I-81.
(See how I did that, Albany?)
Anything north of the Tappan-Zee Bridge
