There is another pistol i have a desire to own, one that uses the 5.7, 20 round mags. Will be doing research on it, the same pistol that was used in a “workplace incident” at a military base, morbidly it worked i’m afraid to say.
The FNseven i think it was.
Nope, sure didn't. 9mm and 45 ACP stomp it. Compare:
38 S&W 200 gr (13 g) LRN 620 ft/s (190 m/s) 176 ft·lbf (239 J)
38 Special 200 gr (13 g) LRN 679 ft/s (207 m/s) 204 ft·lbf (277 J)
9mm Parabellum +P+ 7.45 g (115 gr) JHP 426 m/s (1,400 ft/s) 678 J (500 ft·lbf)
45 ACP 200 gr (13 g) Speer Gold Dot JHP +P 1,080 ft/s (330 m/s) 518 ft·lbf (702 J)
Pretty soon Americans will be using Euro-crap also
Training and good holsters make all the difference.
FN Five-Seven. Neat round. I’ve shot the PS90 rifle in that round.
Tankers, crew-served weapon operators, Medics, MPs, etc.
Not just officers.
The joys of retirement: time and money. [I have another demand on my time, which I don't mention online, but it's nowhere near the 60 hours a week I used to work even outside peak election seasons.] It is very nice! I'm actually rather good with my revolvers, with my Glock, and with various rifles. I still stink at shotgun though.
Pretty soon America will start making better guns, more ammo, less restrictions. Even that sci fi stuff is becoming reality.
I bet as soon ad Trump gets elected .22lr will be cheap and available. Must be YUGE warehouses of it hidden somewhere, Obama warehouses.
Glocks have safeties in their triggers.
There are plenty of idiots who carry unholstered glocks though.
No amount of training can help them.
Last i heard the steel core 5.7 rounds were banned, because they went right through most early versions ballistic armor.
I am well aware of that, and it is easier said than done.
Problem is there are limits to how much training Soldiers get on side arms. From 2007-2010 I was in a field unit that hit the pistol range twice a year. That’s it. Because of my rank I was able to go 4 times. Not nearly enough to keep Snuffy proficient on a pistol without a real safety.
There are other training requirements, as well as a budgetary limit on the amount of rounds you can buy.
I expect the US Army will demand a manual safety. Glock does have the capability to offer custom models with a manual safety to government agencies who insist upon it. It's a modification of the G18 machine pistol which doesn't share commonality in the frame and slide with the familiar G17 pistol. The geometry is completely different even though they appear the same when looking at them from arm's length.
My personal opinion is that if the military is restricted to using FMJ ball ammo, they should choose a cartridge with a projectile using the largest diameter and bullet weight. If that fails to meet their needs, then they should look at the smaller caliber high-speed armor piercing rounds like the FN 5.7 or Hk 4.6mm -- the former rather than the latter.
Also the main reason the M1911 in .45 ACP was adopted. Troops should have a choice.
Make a good battle pistol? I’m kinda wondering. Lots of very fast small almost rifle like bullets sounds appealing. Especially if the enemy has armor.
The St. Paul Police Department specified 1st gen Glock .40s and every one of them had to be “tuned” like mine was. While I had my pistol in at the gun shop, I had Trijicon sights put on.
No trouble since...
Interesting. I resisted the .40 for years. Finally bought a SIG P229 couple of years ago. It’s absolutely reliable out of the box. Guess they got the kinks worked out.
I have the P 238 in .380.
Beautifully made piece...
My Colt Mustang is also like a small 1911 380. Also no grip safety. I load mine with my own 95 gr reloads. W-231 powder. I forget who makes the bullets.
They're *very* loud and will irritate other shooters at an indoor range because it's about as loud an an unsuppressed 5.56 short barreled rifle. Ammo isn't cheap and if you can find it there's usually only a few boxes on the shelf.
You can directly engage targets out to 100 yards since it shoots very flat. It easily outshoots the standard sights on the pistol and anyone wanting a FiveSeveN should honestly think about mounting a mini red dot reflex sight, which I have not done.
The recoil is very slight but the concussion and muzzle flash is an experience. Shooting indoors it will make your nose run. On the other hand, it will clear your sinuses if you're stuffy. Remember that I mentioned above that the gun is stupidly loud. There are folks who've suppressed theirs and I've read that the results are "It does something to help" but makes the gun very nose-heavy.
If there's anything negative about the FiveSeveN it'll be that upon disassembly it'll seem more like an Airsoft gun. Showing folks the exposed barrel usually makes them think it's a toy. Seems very much like a plastic Japanese model.
Really neat and thoroughly capable gun but there's several reasons why it's not more popular with government purchasers. Makes a huge spectacle of itself but using civilian rounds its really just an amusing range gun. I am sure that it would be an entirely suitable CCW option even using the civilianized ammunition, but I don't often carry it.
I’ve met and chatted with the Gunney. Very entertaining. He gave me one of his Glock challenge coins.
