WASHINGTON — Bernie Sanders is the most successful Jewish candidate for the presidency ever. It’s a rare sign of the health of the American republic that no one seems to much care or even notice. Least of all, Sanders himself. Which prompted Anderson Cooper in a recent Democratic debate to ask Sanders whether he was intentionally keeping his Judaism under wraps.
“No,” answered Sanders: “I am very proud to be Jewish.” He then explained that the Holocaust had wiped out his father’s family. And that he remembered as a child seeing neighbours with concentration camp numbers tattooed on their arms. Being Jewish, he declared, “is an essential part of who I am as a human being.”
A fascinating answer, irrelevant to presidential politics but quite revealing about the state of Jewish identity in contemporary America.
Think about it. There are several alternate ways American Jews commonly explain the role Judaism plays in their lives.

It's hard for me to relate to the people he describes in this piece because I'm not Jewish, but he really hits the nail on the head when he cautions about the dangers of "perpetual victimhood" in any group of people.
As thoroughly sympathetic and respectful as I am of bernie’s statement, I’m not at all convinced that he enjoys a lot of real faith in the God of his forefathers. And while faith is s gift - one made all the more difficult to receive when there’s been Horrid tragedy in one’s life, there is no excusing any lack of commitment
to protect and defend the Survivors of that tragedy. Bernie, is there any room in your socialist world view to repair obama’s damage to the Jeeish and Christian peoples and to USA and Israel ? Or would you continue obama’s attacks on America, Israel, and the Church? I’m genuinely open to your response

Yes. But Marx spoke about his own kind of secular persons of Jewish heritage. His statement did not speak of the millions of Jews that affirm their faith in God and try to follow Biblical moral teachings. Marx denigrated his pen kind of secular “jew “ — and many would say that he knew his subject well — all too well perhaps when you examine his own life
The fellow who said his goal was to “dethrone God” had to have been talking about the believing Jews and not the secular ones.

He wanted to attack the believing people yes. All communists and nazis do. All I was trying to say is that when he wrote defamatory smut about Jews it really reflected his personal kind of secular “Jew in name only” type of person. A type he naturally knew quite well, being one himself.
