wholefoods is my emergency go to only... I prefer smaller local markets who sell locally sourced grass fed meat, dairy and eggs. Some supermarkets have started selling grass fed instead of grain fed, but it’s usually overpriced.

City people need to understand where Chipotle is having their problem. On many organic farms, the illegals sheite and pi$$ on you food in the field as they pick it. They may have disease and diarrhea as they come to this country and you are exposed to many forms of filth. They have Porta Potties, but usually don’t slow down long enough to use them and certainly never wash their hands as they handle your food. A quick rinse with water is not good enough for me when you’ve seen what they do. Organic farms many times don’t use modern equipment and methods to harvest and wash their food. You might as well go back to the 1800’s to depend on their methods.

I like to go in and ask where the malt liquor and Slim Jims are.

Actually they sell the best calves liver I have ever tasted. It is cut like a steak.

Never been in a Whole Foods store. Are they as fancy as Save-a-Lot stores?

To be fair...

The one near my studio in Kailua has a great sale on Thursday nights at the salad bar. Anyone who knows anything about buying vegetable oh Hawaii know of the abysmal selection (though it’s better with Costco now). The price is pretty good.

For me Whole Foods has been that extra store I go into because they have a variety of vitamins and vegetables that I cannot find in my main grocery store.

They have a red orange juice that is terrific and not too expensive considering. And they sell their 365 milk which is cheaper than organic milk sold in regular grocery stores and it doesn't have all the hormones and stuff in it.

Sometimes, we’ll drive through the Whole Foods parking lot just to laugh at the weirdos shopping there. They’re a strange looking bunch. Sickly pale skin that oozes new age uber lib. There’s the contrast between the rag tag hippy garb v. the uptight rich designer garb v. the whites who dress in ethnic garb to show the world they embrace diversity.

Yes, it’s “Whole Paycheck” but there’s a reason that I’ve never seen one not doing gangbusters: they deliver the quality. I don’t personally go there much because forget paying $150 for a bag of groceries, and if I look hard enough I can do just as well at my local grocery, but if I was in one of those “Double Income No Kids”, yeah, sure, why not?

I tend to not go anywhere that the majority of people drive Subarus and Prius.

Whole Foods is a nice store with pleasant employees and excellent employee programs. Does it cost more than other stores? Not for the things it carries.

If you want to go out to buy your basic breakfast cereal or whatever, go to your local Publix or Winn Dixie. If you want something a little different, go to Whole Foods.

Publix and Whole Foods both treat their employees well. (I don’t know about Winn Dixie; they may do the same, it’s just that nobody there has ever mentioned it to me.)

Obama tried to shut down Whole Foods because they resisted Obamacare because the Whole Foods health plan was better for their employees. So think about that.

It just depends on what you want to buy and what quality you’re looking for, and if you want to buy something unusual, of course you’re going to pay more.

Only reason I’ve ever gone to it is because they have an excellent selection of beers and ales from local microbreweries on tap that you can take home in a growler.

True story: I was getting ready to have some family over for dinner, and went to their (excellent) butcher counter looking for some veal chops.

The butcher, and two customers turned, and looked at me aghast as if I had asked for fresh butchered puppy.

“Sir, our store is cruelty free.” Spake the butcher. Last time I bothered with them.

It’s expensive but fantastic healthy animal meat selection. Decent yogurt and other fermented food sections. If there were one here I would go for the meat and fermented products that I don’t make myself.

Feedlot animals aren’t healthy to eat. You can source WF meat to their farms, local farms you can visit or study.

I have one right in the town I live in. Been there once. Nice store, quality goods, just too much money across the board. Also have a Trader Joe’s in town, right up the street, much better prices. I use them here & there, but I do almost all of my shopping at Aldi.

We go to the fishmonger there when sardines are running in the fall - he calls when he gets them in fresh.

Otherwise there are a couple minor Japanese things she wants that we have to drive 2 1/2 hours for so sometimes if we’re out of stock we can pick them up there.

Shopping is all about tradeoffs between time, price, and convenience. My wife is willing to put in the extra time and “my” conveninence so as not to spend “her” money ;)
