A mysterious, mile-long landing strip in the remote Nevada desert could be the home base for testing sensors on a top-secret fleet of drones, security experts speculate.
The asphalt landing strip is in Area 6 of the Yucca Flat test site, about 12 miles northeast of the infamous Area 51 that has long been the subject of conspiracy theories. In Area 6, a handful of hangars with clamshell doors are clustered at one end of the airstrip, images from Google Earth reveal.

Yes they were originally lengthened for the B-36. I am sure the B-52 pilots enjoyed the long runways too.
The SR-71 likes to have 7,000 ft
I suspect some kind of nuclear material storage. Notice the double layer of security fence around the immediate area and all of the tall poles within the secured area, probably mounted with multiple security cameras and lights.
I've heard at midnight all the Agents andThe Superhuman Crew also hold meetings there. Then they go out and round up everyone who knows more than they do.
15,000 feet. Built for B-47's. LONG take-off in that bird.
If I were to hazard a guess:
I think its purpose is two fold.
One is an emergence field for an armed UAV to land. Hung ordnance is a real problem on a UAV.
Second is an airstrip for RQ-170s or maybe even RQ-180s.
737-800 needs 6000 feet +
Looks like a mighty big steam roller flattened the top pic ;^)
I once flew into the old SAC base at Plattsburgh, NY. The landing strip was two miles long! We used less than 5,000’ of it.
It took a long time to get to the little terminal. It was two miles away!
“What needs nearly a mile long runway?”
“A mile long runway isnt really that long.
Depends on whats landing there”
Especially in “high and hot” desert conditions. Even large private Biz Jets would have problems operating from a strip that short, much of the time.
I tend to agree, that’s likely a Drone/Dirigible base.
Grew up in Boston so I know the type. Used to work construction as a kid and there were some truly funny guys on some of those construction sites.
Your dad obviously had the political system well figured out.
“What needs nearly a mile long runway?”
I flew on recon planes (C121’s) during the Vietnam conflict - they needed TWO mile long runways due to the added weight of electronics gear.
B-52’s need two mile long runways.
I’m guessing any bomber that is fully loaded with aramaments and max fuel probably needs a pretty long runway.
One of Denver’s runway (16R/34L) is 16,000.
Cool!
12,000 and 10,000 ft at Eglin. They are configured in a V pattern, so if you land on the runway away from the terminal, you have to travel the length of one runway and back up the other one to get to the terminal.
I used to operate a ZSU-23-4 near Kawich and Cedar Pass.
I hated it.
“Edwards Air Force base has one runway 15,000 feet long, another is 12,000 feet long, and a third is 8,000 feet long.”
You’re confusing them with numbers.
One mile is 5,280’. So your examples show one almost three miles, one over two miles, and a third over a mile long.
Most people do not know how many feet are in a mile.
Obama’s trap range.
Most commercial runways are in the area of 9000 - 12000 feet long.
