Decorated veterans star in tough new anti-Trump ads (Video)
The Hill ^ | 3-5-2016

Decorated veterans are going after Donald Trump’s character in hard-hitting new Florida ads designed to drive down the Republican presidential front-runner’s popularity to stop him winning the crucial winner-take-all state on March 15.

In new attack ads, released by conservative nonprofit American Future Fund within a multimillion-dollar rotation, two veterans, Afghanistan Special Forces Commander Lt. Col. Michael Waltz and retired Vietnam pilot and prisoner of war Lt. Col. Tom Hanton, hit Trump for dodging the draft in Vietnam, “serving only himself,” and for criticizing Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for being captured during the Vietnam War.

American Future Fund spokesman Stuart Roy said in an email to The Hill Saturday that the group is swapping out its current ads in the Florida Panhandle for the new veteran ads and said it "will be adding new money there on Monday, as well."

“The Panhandle is full of active and retired military. Think Eglin Air Force Base, Pensacola Naval Air Station, Hulburt Field, Naval Support Activity Panama City, and Tyndall Air Force Base.”

In one of the ads, Waltz tells viewers to put a stop Trump's campaign.

“Donald Trump hasn’t served this country a day in his life, essentially dodged the draft in Vietnam through multiple deferments,” Waltz says, speaking directly into the camera. “All Donald Trump has served is himself. Don’t let Donald Trump fool you. Look into his real record and stop Trump now."

The 1-Y pool was never called on during the Vietnam War.

I tried to get my doctor to sign off on herniated disc the day after my number was read on TV (and there were 8 other 18 year olds in front of me, I promise you that). He refused, and gave me the worst look ever. He told me I had a back-ache, gave me two aspirins, and told me to consult with my dad on what to do with a “back-ache” (he knew my Dad, my Dad did the whole Pacific Theater in WW2, and knew my Dad would not be happy).

Later I regretted (like many of us), not going and finding another doctor. I was not happy to be there, and swore if I could ever get my kid out of a draft I would.

My oldest enlisted and served with pride, and we were proud of him, but if there was a draft for a war to fight other peoples battles and make politicians wealthy again, a war in which we had no intention of winning, and he wanted to be deferred, I’d have done everything in my power to make sure he was.

For example, if Obama put in a draft, I’d help everyone I knew who wanted to get out of that war to get out. He’d send them off, tie their hands and have them tried as war criminals when they got back, with no intention of ever winning the war.

And by the way (not directed at you poster), when I hear about how we have to listen to the word of all “honorable” vets as gospel, I can tell who served and who hasn’t. I knew then and I know now many vets who I wouldn’t have trusted alone with my daughters much less lent $100 to.

The military was filled with all sorts of undesirables (probably myself included), after all we were drafted.

Sorry to burst some bubbles.

Go Trump!

Not sure, it seems there are a lot of people way more resourceful than I on this website (of which I have been thoroughly impressed with since joining).

I am curious as well.

This issue was settled when Clinton ran for office in 1992.

Frankly who cares.

If we were to be honest then we need to ask the same tough questions about Vietnam as we have about Iraq.

That war was the seminal event for those of us in the Baby Boom generation and even today the reasons for the U.S. to have been there are murky.

The Flower of the U.S. youth was sacrificed for reasons that remain vague.

“There had to medical evidence discovered by or verified by Selective Service physicians.”

Yup! They listened to my heart, and the doc shook his head. They wouldn’t tell me what they heard either! Jus said, “You’re 1Y”

He could have volunteered.

Or was it that he was a Canadian citizen up to 18 months ago and that protected him?

GHOSTS OF VIETNAM CALLING DONALD TRUMP: SHOW US YOUR DRAFT CAR

By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor on March 31, 2011

TO SOME IT NEVER HAPPENED MILITARY CADET GRAD IN 64, COLLEGE IN 68 YET NO SERVICE OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER

…and, when homeless vet activists asked for his support (not money) he answered…

“Mr. Trump is in receipt of your business presentation. While he appreciates your bringing this opportunity to his attention, regretfully, it is of no interest to him.”

No, Cruz was not drafted because there is no draft. But many men have volunteered and while they did, Cruz was gathering all the glittering prizes that Harvard and Washington DC hands out. He’s no hero, he’s not even a near-hero. He’s just another slime ball climbing the greasy pole of government success. And since he’s bored and has failed in the Senate, he wants the top prize. Peter Principle comes to mind!

You are right. A hero in Blackhawk Down was a pedophile. They changed his name in the movie. Sociopaths, for example, often do not feel fear the same way as the rest of us and thus may perform heroic deeds.

I certainly understand. My brother flew planes and to this day won’t discuss anything. My husband knew as well as others they were not there to win. I’m sure for this reason alone many killed themselves while serving over there. It was too common for my husband to mention in his letters the loss of a friend. He then, as others, came home to news on TV of protesters against the war and no one wanting to rent to us while he was in a uniform. Deferment wasn’t a bad word then

That part was responding to vandekoiks question about my first post.

To your question: yes, I did realize that I was rendering a judgment after that.

There was a draft lottery in 1969. All 366 birthdays were drawn out of a big fishbowl. First birthday drawn , first drafted.

The numbers actually drafted never went higher than around 140, IIRC.

Millions watched or listened on radio the night the lottery took place.

Although to have been more correct, I probably should have said “I WAS merely providing...” That tense would have been more correct with the prior sentence.
