Why not? I don’t get “hooked” on caffeine. It’s a blessing and a curse.

100% Columbian is the way to go.
That is a safe choice. Other good beans are Kenya AA and Kona($$$). 100% Columbian does NOT mean Folgers. You can go with upscale chains (Gloria Jean's) or the local beans in the top feeder bins from better supermarkets should be okay.
Stick with a medium roast. NO French or Italian roast.
Go heavy on the half/half or cream (not milk).
Now, get something that goes with coffee. Coffee goes GREAT with a dish of good vanilla ice cream. It also goes well with sugar cookies, doughnuts, cream puffs, chocolate cake and any kind of pie.
Enjoy the dessert/coffee with good company and eat/drink slowly. When you develop the taste, the coffee and the dessert increase the enjoyment of each other.

Nope. I should’ve posted this in the body of the topic. Caffeine, strangely, doesn’t affect me. If anything, it makes me sleepy.

You drink tea?
Because unless you drink coffee every day, or strong tea, you can’t say caffeine doesn’t affect you.
No one drinks coffee for the taste (booze either). We drink it for, as my grandma used to say, the lift.

I didn't much like coffee either. Then I decided to make the best that I possibly could. I have an artesian well; so I made sure I used very pure water. And I got Greenwell Farms Reserve Kona Coffee here: http://store.greenwellfarms.com. I drink a pot of this every morning, black, no cream, no sugar. I look forward to it in the morning; I love to drink it as I read the posts on FR et al.; and it helps keep my weight down.
On the other hand--maybe you just don't like coffee. There are hereditary factors, such as enzymes that destroy or fail to destroy components of food, which account for differences in the ways people taste things. My wife, for example, cannot stand the taste of olives, which I love. I think she actually tastes them differently. On the other hand, she loves sweet potatoes, and that's one of the few tastes I absolutely dislike, though I have tried all my life to like them; I think my wife and I taste them differently.

First you get you some good coffee, like King Cake from PJ’s Coffee in New Orleans, or any of their amazing seasonal flavors.
Then you grind it, brew it, put some powdered milk in your cup for creamer, and some sweetener. I use Liquid Stevia since I’m diabetic. I also find that sugar, even though I love sugar, ruins the taste of my coffee for some strange reason. Stevia is more of a neutral sort of sweetener in that regard.
Then you drink it! Mmmmm. A cup of liquid king cake. Who wouldn’t like that!?

Quality beans, home roasted if possible, fresh ground, brewed in an AeroPress or vacuum brewer, with good water at the right temperature for the right time, is a delight.
I envy you. I am in Columbus, but go to Church in Mabelton. Could you make me your home roasted stuff? It sounds great.

Any advice for a coffee novice like myself?
If you don't like coffee now, why do you want to learn how to like coffee?
I don't like beets, never have and have no desire to post a vanity thread for help on liking them.............There are certain things in life that don't require outside help and coffee and beets are at the top of the list.
To: Politicalkiddo
This is the way I have made coffee for decades. Yes, sometimes I use perc or drip or even instant but THIS IS THE BEST!

Try this. You get one of these re-usable filters:
I don't like bitter coffee or super-strong coffee either, I like a bold medium flavor. I don't like Columbian coffee (Starbucks), I prefer this Brazilian brand.
(Click to open in new window)
It's the extrabold variety, but it's not super strong flavor wise, plus you can control the real strength by how much you put in "the sock" pictured above. Two heaping tablespoons should make 4 regular sized cups. This is the morning ritual in my house. :)
(PS: This brand smells amazing too.)
