Superstar NFL quarterback Cam Newton is black, and even though many people loudly insist that shouldnât matter, it is precisely those people who are always making a preposterously huge deal of it.
Chief among these offenders is Mr. Newton himself, who last Wednesday told reporters at a press conference that the reason he sometimes faces criticism is not because heâs a high-profile sports star and all of them sometimes face criticismâno, it is clearly his status as a Negroidal American that inspires the negative comments:
Iâm an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they havenât seen nothing that they can compare me to.
In truth, Iâve seen thousands of people I can compare him toânamely, African Americans who deflect any possible criticism by blaming it on racism. Iâve seen this for two generations and counting.
The following day, ESPN Radio host Bomani Jonesâa black man who approaches black issues from a black perspective in the blackest way he knowsâsaid that Cam Newton makes many white Americans uncomfortable because he is not a shuffling and compliant goody-two-shoes black man but rather an unapologetically âblackety-blackâ man. Jones opined that there has been a âhistorical lineage that indicates a lot has been done to keep black people from playing quarterbackâ and that the âsimple realityâ is that our wicked nation âdoes not like black people very much.â
USA Today published an article on Newtonâs blackety-blackness that featured a quote by Doug Williams, the former Washington Redskins quarterback who in 1988 became the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Williams constructs a self-contained logical Guilt Loop wherein anyone who dares to criticize Newton is in denial of their racist motivations:

Actually, that's incorrect. The laptop incident was pretty much swept away (remember Urban Meyer was the coach then). The reason Cam bolted UF was because he was about to get investigated for Academic Fraud, which would have ended his eligibility to play in college, so he left, before the investigation began.
Russell Wilson. See: SB 49.
There was another play where his running back reversed field and came back to the other sideline.
Newton was standing there, and I said aloud, “C’mon Cam get out in front of him and block.”
Newton’s a big QB, and I’m sure he could have made a difference for his guy working in a broken field.
Does he have a Joe Namath clause in his contract? The one which forbade Namath rorm making tackles, even if he’d just thrown and interception.
Down Lo’ Jones!
Because a black man in sports is such a rare thing
I disagree. He has great physical attributes but he’s not the most talented quarterback out there. Up until this year his teams were 6-10, 7-9, 12-4, 7-8, 15-1. He has a career 59.6% completion percentage, throws 1 interception for every 2 TD and a career passer rating of 88.3.
I fully expected him to play like he did last night against the Seahawks or the Cardinals. Once he gets stuck in a game he gets into trouble.
Oh brother Seattle has a black quarterback but he seems mature. Maturity is why Cam is being questioned.
Cam would be wise to look at what has happened to Kaepernick to see his future.
That's Willie Beamen's line from Any Given Sunday.
I can think of thirty-one of them.
Another way to put it is Cam has a low Emotional IQ. Nothing to do with race.
Michael Orr and Michael Strahan never act like this. Orr still plays. Strahan retired but never did this childish stuff.
just to add to your already great list.
” I’m an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare me to.”
Young bragadocious African-American Quarterback got his ass kicked by an old white guy.
Actually it got kicked by a bunch of black guys on Denver's defense.
I suppose we ought be grateful he didn’t start shooting people in the interview room, as they tend to do when pissed at the world for their own problems. Maybe him pouting and storming off mid interviews is the best we can expect from the best nfl black quarterback.
And boosters paid this flake $180K to come to Auburn while he was still in Jr. College learning how to hold a crayon? Classy.
I like Basketball American...
