Investor's Business Daily ^ | 2/2/2016 | John Merline

To many of those who tuned in, Donald Trump’s three-minute remarks after finishing second in the Iowa caucuses appeared remarkably humble. He even congratulated Ted Cruz, whom Trump had called almost every name in the book in the days before.

Clearly, Trump’s strategy of attacking his rival’s character didn’t work. But Cruz’s strategy of attacking Trump on his views apparently did.

I wouldn’t read too much into an Iowa victory. What plays well there won’t carry over to other states.

The way i saw it whoever has won Iowa in years past usually failed to become POTUS.

Although I lean more to Cruz than Trump, I’ve heard that Iowa is really not an accurate indicator of an eventual election winner. As I understand it many have not won Iowa and gone on to win the general.

McCain finished fourth in IA in 2008 and Romney finished in a tie with Santorum in 2012.

They both went on to lose in November.

Please, NOT Rubio! I will vote for Trump OR Cruz though...wish they’d join forces and focus on beating Hill or Bern!

Most have not.

The big reason is that the winner usually spends so much time there, that they have no clue as to how to repeat the win in a completely different part of the country.

Rubio is where Jeb would have liked to be.

After his humiliating 3% finish in IA, the steam is gone from the shock and awe Jeb campaign.

The establishment will coalesce around Rubio in short order.

I support Trump. I will happily vote for Cruz if he somehow gets nominated (although I don’t think he can win the general).

I will not vote for Rubio. Hopefully, the next several primaries will split among the GOPe stars. I’ve said all along Kasich would finish second in NH.

I’m deathly afraid that one of them (Rubio, Kasich, Bush) will break out and eventually get the nomination.

Yup. Now that the joyful tortoise is on death row, Rubio is the go to guy for moderate Republicans.

The good news for Cruz is that while he was focusing in Iowa, we have been seeing announcements of campaign staff for several other states. He is putting people in place to start the groundwork in those states as well.

Cruz has got organization. His approach is decidedly nuts and bolts old fashioned grassroots work.

And he is disciplined, determined and steady.

Monday was the best night of his life for him.

GOP -— From 1976-2012, 6 of 10 GOP Iowa winners have won the nomination. Of those, 3 have won the General Election (Clinton 1996, Obama 2008, Obama 2012).

Dem -— From 1972-2012, 7 of 11 Dem Iowa winners have won the nomination. Of those, 3 have won the General Election (Reagan 1984, Bush 2000, Bush 2004).
