Gallup: 'Trump Most Unpopular Candidate of Either Party' By Far
Weekly Standard ^ | 1/3/02016 | Chris Deaton

Posted on 01/30/2016 11:52:07 AM PST by conservativejoy

Research from the polling firm Gallup has found that Donald Trump is the "most unpopular candidate" for president in either major party - both in this election and all the way back to 1992.

Trump's unfavorable rating currently stands at 60 percent, which is substantially higher than that of any of his Republican rivals. Former Florida governor Jeb Bush is at 45 percent, and everyone else is even lower: Chris Christie is at 38 percent, Ted Cruz is at 37 percent, Marco Rubio is at 33 percent, and the reliably likable Ben Carson is only at 30 percent.

In the Democratic field, not even the scandal-plagued Hillary Clinton matches Trump's low standing - she holds a 52 percent unfavorable rating. Her fellow Democratic contender Bernie Sanders is at 31 percent.

The numbers are drawn from surveys of the entire U.S. population, not just self-identified voters.

Gallup's editor in chief Frank Newport frames these figures historically:

"I wanted to see how Trump's unfavorable played out in the context of previous elections, so I went back to look at the unfavorable ratings of the major-party candidates from 1992 through the current election. The bottom line is that Trump now has a higher unfavorable rating than any candidate at any time during all of these previous election cycles, and that conclusion takes into account the fact that unfavorable ratings tend to rise in the heat of a general election campaign as the barbs, negative ads and heightened partisanship are taken to their highest levels."

Even when compared with sitting presidents at their most unpopular moments, Trump's unfavorable rating sticks out. The 60 percent statistic is sandwiched between Bill Clinton's high of 59 percent in March 2001, shortly after he left office, and George W. Bush's 66 percent, measured in April 2008 amid the tumultuous homestretch of his second term.

It is quite understandable when you factor in the 60+% of GOP primary voters who support someone else plus the independents and Democrats.

Looking at the indicia in the upper right corner, I see that the mailer was produced and mailed by SPI. That would be the company specializing in political direct mailers that produced this. It’s been used before, so it’s a program that’s marketed, that has had some success. When subjected to widespread scrutiny, it does seem invasive to attempt to embarrass non-voters into voting, however it is information in the public domain. I’ll go out on a limb and say that the uproar against the Cruz campaign for using this prepackaged direct mail campaign is motivated by an opponent, most likely Rubio. Should the Cruz campaign have known that this would be very controversial with Republicans and conservatives? I’d say yes. However, it’s not quite the issue that it’s been made out to be. Just imho as a person with experience in direct marketing, of course.

I've seen some wild conversions here. If Trump wins the nomination and his position on illegals 'evolves' for the general election I fully expect some to begin singing the praises of cheap illegal labor.

The circle will be complete.

boy that’s an ingenious way to get Cruz voters to back trump. I hope you enjoy clinton. I have to say that some people on this board that support trunp are the most simplistic naive misinformed misled easily fooled by a fellow New Yorker people I have ever met in my entire life. Take it as a compliment :)

Nothing you trot out here is going to reverse the self inflicted damage of the shaming letter and Teddys failure to lead in the face of it.

He’s toast.

So according to this poll we should elect Carson since he has the lowest “unfavorable” rating. Of course people don’t vote for the least offensive candidate - they vote for the candidate who they think will most likely accomplish what they expect.

This is a stupid poll. And that comes form a voter who will not vote for Trump in the Primary.

why do you bother? I haven’t been around the country much but being a New Yorker and seeing all of the trump supporters on this board makes me think there’s a naive lot out there that I could have made a fortune selling vacuums to. I might just pass on the generals if it’s the National Socialists and the Communists.

His unpopular rating will go even higher when people find out about the strip clubs he opens, the affairs he bragged about having with married women, his eminent domain problems,... And we you haven’t heard it all. Bill Clinton trump worshippers are no different than Obama worshippers. Only the name changed but same character.

I’m not debating that they sent it. I’m questioning the uproar, it’s clearly being motivated by an opponent, in my opinion Rubio. It’s a prepackaged direct mailer that has been used in the past with some success.

Let us parse this a little. The Donald is the one with most “unpopularity” among REPUBLICAN voters. But those in favor, are among the most enthusiastic of their support, which, in the end, may sway enough of the so-called “uncommitted” voters in this largely amorphous “center”, to overcome, by some decidedly much larger margin, whatever deficit he may have with the Republicans who “disapprove” of him right now.

The Donald is attracting votes from what at one time were called the “Reagan Democrats”, who feel they have no representation of their views by any of the candidates so far offered up by the Democrats.

An altogether unexpected and previously ignored majority may even now be shaping up.

Nixon got elected in 1968 against a badly wounded LBJ, who, though not running himself, had enough of his patina rub off on Hubert Humphrey, that Humphrey was too seriously tarnished to stand up to Nixon.

The Donald will be running against a badly damaged member of the Current Regime, whose career was blemished by the crony capitalism that was rampant in the years from 2007 through 2016.

Of course. And that's why he's not leading in every poll.

I don't get it, either. Are all the polls wrong?

Also, how to explain his YUGE crowds? Crowds larger than every other candidate combined?

I am asking you my questions in all seriousness.

Still.... something ain’t right. Sure they have to confirm it, their return address is on it. But did they ORDER this from the marketing company? Likely not, it was probably just done in a small market to see what happened. I find it despicable, but I know Cruz well enough to know he’d never OK something like this.

Guess we’ll have to wait for the rest of this story on October Monday.. in the meantime, the DesMoines poll comes out in a few hours. Surprised we’re not making book on that!
