Vanity: What's the best mattress?
1/22/16 | me

Need expert freeper help: just bought the casper mattress and even though their customer service is exemplary, the mattress is entirely too hard for me. I've slept on it for 5 nights so far and I have tossed and turned every night, all night, trying to find a comfortable position.

If money is no object, what's the best mattress out there?

If money is no object, then a latex mattress is what you want. The thicker the better. Ours is eighteen inches. They are simply the best. Ask anyone who has one.

When I went back to Việt Nam the first time I stayed in people’s houses, not in hotels. They were prosperous folks and had well made bedsteads. What they didn’t have were mattresses so they were like sleeping tables. I figured I could put up with those as I had done okay on the ground when I went camping as a young adult. What I found is that I went to sleep very quickly and woke up 4 to 4 1/2 hours later wide awake and alert and feeling good about 4 AM and stayed alert through the day to late at night late at night and did not need to take a siesta as everyone else did in the hottest part of the day. After I had been back for a while I noticed that I did not sleep well and woke up with a headache as often as not. I finally constructed a bed that was the equivalent of those I had experienced over there but not as aesthetic. Since then I have pretty much replicated the experience in Việt Nam. I am older and creakier and sleep longer now, 5-6 hours but I wake up AWAKE and no headache. I wish I had done that many years ago.

Tempurpedic foam probably is IF YOU KNOW FOR SURE YOU LIKE IT. Sleep on one first. Also, there must be zero accidents on it so it must be fully covered with protective covers at all times if you have small children or pets, etc., it cannot be cleaned. I slept on one in a vacation condo and one day, one day, I might get one. Right now I have little pukers and pee’ers.

However, if you want a totally awesome Christian family run mattress company who can make ANYTHING your way (if you need organic materials or are allergic to something or whatever quirk y seek, ask and they will do it), and also has a zillion choices in all price ranges and make everything at their factory in Orange County, CA, check out Custom Comfort. We have six of their beds and it is the only bed company I buy from.

I love them so much I order on the phone. I don’t need to try them out. I speak with one of their great salespeople, they figure out what I’m looking for, in my price range, and boom, new bed. I HIGHLY recommend them.

I am in Australia, so the products here might not be available for you. However, I am sure there are other companies, making mattresses on this model. It really works well.

I bought two from IKEA. You can lie on all the different models and pick the best one for you.

I fought my wife over the laytex mattress because of the incredible price difference. But my wife is smarter than I am and had them deliver it to the house for a 72 hr trial run. That first night was the best night of sleep I’d had in as long as I could remember. There was no way I was going to allow them to take it back. I never knew it could make such a difference. It was money well spent.

I slept on waterbeds for years. When I was 16 I bought a waterbed for my parents and set it up on Christmas Eve when they were at a friend’s house. They loved it and kept it for a good 10 yrs.

Do they even make them anymore?

I have a tempurpedic as well and find it’s great if you sleep on your back. I’m a side sleeper, though, and am thinking of moving on to something else even though we’ve had the tempur tantrum for over 10 years.

Best mattress I ever slept on - and this has nothing to do with the election - was at the Trump Soho when I was there on a junket to NYC. It’s either a Serta or sealy, but I can’t remember which.

Of course that was only for one night, too, so you never know how it would be long term

Cheers,
Jim

I find mine too hot in the summer but that comes in handy during Alberta winters...

We bought a Lucid 16” (not 18”) latex, memory foam, mattress from Amazon. King size was 1K, but it comes with a 25 yr. warranty. We’ve had it for three years and, unlike any spring mattress we’ve ever had, it is as firm and dent free as the day we bought it. As another poster put it you seem to float on a latex mattress.

I believe I am too thin to sleep on a uncushioned table. My hips and shoulders would scream with pain.

Temperpedic comes in several different firmness es. I have heard people complain that they are too soft and they bog down in them. Problem was they should have chose the firmer one. Ours is fabulous!

We had a Sleep Number too but it sprang a leak.
