There will be two empty seats during the upcoming 88th Academy Awards. Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee announced on Martin Luther King Jr. Day that they will not be attending the 2016 Oscars over the lack of diversity in this year's nominations.
As previously reported, Pinkett Smith, 44, initially posted a series of tweets on Saturday to air her grievances. On Monday, she shared a Facebook video and confirmed that she will not be attending or watching the live show. (Last year, only white actors received nominations too.)
"I can't help but ask the question: Is it time that people of color recognize how much power [and] influence we have amassed that we no longer need to ask to be invited anywhere?" the Gotham alum said in the clip, posted on Monday, January 18. "Have we now come to a new time and place where we recognize that we can no longer beg for the love, acknowledgment or respect of any group? The academy has the right to acknowledge whoever they choose. To invite whoever they choose. And now I think that it's our responsibility now to make the change.
"Maybe it is time to pull back our resources, and we put them back into our communities. Into our programs. And we make programs for ourselves that acknowledges us in ways that we see fit. That are just as good as what the so-called 'mainstream' wants," she continued. "Begging for acknowledgment or even asking diminishes dignity and diminishes power. And we are a dignified people, and we are powerful. So let the Academy do them in all grace and love. And let's do us differently."
Can't make this stuff up folks.
Entertainers are way too concerned about stroking their egos by give one another award after award. How about an Oscar or Emmy for a plumber, electrician, auto mechanic, etc.?
......
Hear hear! Amen, bro
Also lump all sports figures in there...they are entertainers, too.
A couple of freaks. The others will not miss them as there are many in Hollywood.
Entertainers are the only people so worthless that they have to have endless awards given them to prop up their pitiful egos. Can’t imagine a nationally televised carpentry awards show. The nominees for best hammerer are... The nominees for best planer are... The nominees for best blueprint reader are...
How about a participation trophy? Or a new category - The Because-I’m-Black Oscar?
Special Things For Special People
So why don’t they just have a Negroes Oscars. They separate themselves on everything else.
Don't get me wrong, sometimes a movie truly deserves and gets an Oscar.
Like The Godfather, and GF II.
Totally deserved every accolade.
Philadelphia?
No. That was just a payoff to the gay community by Hollywood.
See? We DO care about gays!
Is it a movie that you just can't stop watching over and over, because it's so good?
Nope.
I don’t usually don’t agree with Spike Lee. But this time I do.
Hollywood is a bunch of hypocrites.
The kid in Creed was fantastic. And not as a token. There are lots talented and worthy people of color.
Didn’t Denzel Washington get an Oscar?
Chris Rock hates whites and genuinely believes blacks can’t be racist (do I know this? No, but years of observations and listening to his jokes led to this hypothesis)...my prediction is liberal white self-loathing will lead to Hollyweird keeping Rock as the host...only if he protests will he not do it. he’ll rip into them like piranha. And they are too stupid to do anything but look at each other and giggle.
I guess they advocate participation trophies, eh?
So does this mean there are some tickets available?
Maybe Hollywood’s hand should be forced to make a percentage of nominations, and then of course, winners be black. I mean, it’s only fair.
So what and who cares?
...because I'm boycotting the Oscars too
I want to see some whites, asians and mexicans nominated for the bet or other all black awards. Oh wait, I don’t care about any celebrity awards.
Pretty cool glasses though, huh?
Lay down with racists, wake up with stoopid looking eyewear.
Still wondering why her son is a model for Chanel - the female side.
Jennering anyone?
You win some you lose some/ get over it Smith and Lee
This is right up there with women not making as much money in the movies business as men do. Ricky Gervais was hysterical when he talked about it at the Golden Globes. I’m going to see if I can get that clip.
