Last year to open the Academy Awards, host Neil Patrick Harris joked, "Welcome to the 87th Oscars. Tonight we honor Hollywood's best and whitest." Then, after a beat: "Sorryâ¦brightest."
It was a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement of one of the biggest scandals to plague the Oscars in more than a decade: every single acting nominee was white. Worse, in a year when Selma, a film about Martin Luther King Jr., was the best reviewed film of the yearâbut shut out in every race but Best Picture.
This year the joke is no longer funny.

I’ve gotten into the habit of changing the channel every time I see a half-black character with Side Show Bob hair in a commercial. Not because of the product or the actor/actress, but because it’s become so obvious that the people who pitched the commercial had the brilliant and oh-so-original idea that they had to show someone who’s ethnic but not really black. Someone “safe” for all demographics.
There was a smidgeon of truth in the joke...one should always leave out any word containing references to being “bright” when talking about the H-wood crowd.
Warning: Some Language
Homosexuals and lesbians are ahead of blacks in Hollywood.
Yeah, in so many commercials, blacks are beautiful, accomplished people in lovely suburban homes, using the right products, while whites (or at least the males) are dumb, clumsy doofuses who have to be set straight by their much smarter, cooler black neighbors/coworkers. Phooey. When they stop with that crap, maybe then I’ll care about the Oscars.
They call it “racially ambiguous,” and you’re right, such actors are deliberately chosen for commercials.
The one that used to put me over the top was for Walgreens. Little white girl standing at the curb looking a little messy. (Message: White mother is inferior.) Black mother stops in her spiffy van full of little girls to pick up pathetic white girl. Black mom is oh-so-together and stops at Walgreens and shops there to get the correct hair product to make white girl presentable. Arrrgh!
Mumbling racist.
Scandal?
Seems to be a trend. I'm not a big conspiracy fan, but when the same stuff starts to happen all at once, it makes you think. Wonder if the MSM is getting their walking orders to shut down dissent.
Several local TV and newspaper sites have abandoned comments "for civility". I thought the give and take of free ideas was great for civility.
Didn't Robert Downey, Jr. get a honorary one for Tropic Thunder?
Just kidding.
Or elect them POTUS...
When Black actors, directors, producers & screenwriters can produce works about being human, rather than about the “black experience of racism and oppression”, then maybe they will get equal consideration.
For comparison, how many white supremacist movies made the Oscar’s cut?
Yes they are....blacks don’t have a clue. Invaders, illegals and trans etc are way up on the ruling elites list. I think blacks are way down on the list....then Christians/whitey. They are just one notch ahead of us. They have now clue what is in store for them when obama gets all his policies in for decades.
I’ve come to the conclusion that Black, Negro, etc. is no longer a race; it’s an attitude, a way of life.
First, what percentage of parentage makes one Black? Obama is 50% Caucasian, 38% Negro, 12% Sephardi (arab). How is he our first Black president if he is 50% Caucasian?
Ben Carson is a Negro, but a much better American than that white woman in Washington state who was posing as Black so she could run the local NAACP chapter!
I’ll bet an E-8 or O-6 Negro SEAL, Ranger, Snake Eater, Marine is much closer to me than he is to Al Sharpton.
I could go on and on, but you get my drift.
Live Long and Prosper
I never saw that one! Ugh! So they’re attacking white females now, too.
Why not give everyone who ever participated in making a movie a “Participation Oscar” and make everyone feel good!
This would include the financing and caterers.
Have never watched the Academy awards.
Have no idea what pictures were up for awards or what actors etc. Its amazing what people can get worked up over......
Oh yeah, am I ....uh......zzzzzz.....ever outraged over the ..uh....zzzzzzzzzzzzz....failure to nominate...uh....zzzzzzzzzzzzz....(oh excuse me, a little sleepy here).....what was it?...Oh yeah, failure to nominate....uh....zzzzzzzz......black....actors for ....zzzzzzz...uh....worthless awards.
I have the answer, let all the people of color boycott all Hollywood movies, then maybe we’ll see how little economic effect they have.
