My 14 yr old has done a good job saving some money and would like to purchase a .22 rifle. Probably lever action. Don't need anything flashy, but something that won't break the bank. Probably around $300 although I am happy to help him with the $$ if more money is needed. He will use it to walk through the woods and hunt squirrel and rabbit. Would love any Freepers advice what to look for or stay away from. He is a good kid and will keep up on the maintenance.

I bought a Remington 22 Level Action when I was 18. Still love it

Oops...didnât see the lever action prerequisite. If he gets the lever action now, I'd bet within two years he'll wish he would have got the Ruger 10-22 instead.

The best lever action .22 ever made? Get a Winchester Model 9422 XTR, if you can find one on the used gun market. Better yet, buy it from a private seller to defy the gun-banners.

Not exactly on target but a Marlin 882 (bolt action) in .22 magnum is a tack driving machine.

If lever action and you can add a bit get a Henry Golden Boy.
Bud’s has them for $431.57.

I bought one of those when they first came out, late 60’s(?). I used to shoot it like a pistol what a nice piece of machinery, dead on.

Get him a real gun and take him for several sessions of on range training. .22 is worthless.

None whatsoever, I just happened to buy a 10/22 first. I do own several lever action rifles in higher caliber.

Ruger 10/22 is the obvious choice. Was my first and I still have one.
I'll second that. Ruger 10/22 ... like the Daisy BB gun, it's almost an American tradition.

I had a Marlin single shot bolt action when I was 18 or so. Loved it. Keeps ammo cost down and builds good basic skills.
