Remember the excitement on Dec. 6? Not only did the College Football Playoff selection committee spit out two appetizing semifinal matchups, it delivered a New Year's Six slate seemingly packed with steak and sizzle.
The games turned out to be empty calories. New Year's Six? Try the New Year's Snooze, a series of blowouts that left us bloated and unsatisfied. All six contests were decided by 14 points or more. Average margin of victory: 24.2 points.
Alabama fans and Clemson fans are thrilled. The same holds for those who support Stanford, Ohio State, Houston and Ole Miss. They watched their teams win without having their blood pressure spike. Oh, and the S-E-C chant is back. You know you missed it.
The New Year's Six had less tension than a vat of Jell-O (or a Big 12 defense). But the games, as always, provided some takeaways.
Here are six from the New Year's Six:

no the minor bowls do not have multi million dollar pay outs. Thats why these bowls come and go....they struggle.
I thought McCaffrey should have won the Heisman. He does so much more than the kid from Bama.....so so so much more.
you forgot you /sarc icon....at least I hope you did....I sincerely hope you are not serious.
I meant Yipes, in a Laz sort of way!
Actually, you only get an average of 15 minutes of football in a game. The rest is commercials, huddles, half time, etc.
Phyllis from Mulga seems pretty happy.
Which reminds me, this is off topic but I’m curious. If Finebaum asked Phyllis who she’s leaning towards in the Presidential race do you think she’d be a Cruz gal or a Trump one, and if she goes on a rant for/against someone would it help/hurt anybody? I’m thinking Phyllis ranting Jeb Bush would be even better than her audio on Cowherd.
Because as Phyllis goes, so goes the State of Alabama. All I know is if Trump shows up in AL with that Eagle on his shoulder, it might send the wrong message. /sarc
Thug ball. Thug ball. Thug ball. Thug ball. Thug ball.
Thug ball. Thug ball. Thug ball. Thug ball. Thug ball.
Thug ball. Thug ball. Thug ball. Thug ball. Thug ball.
How about college exit exams?
I think employers would support the idea.
Maybe introduce an element of debt reduction, for passing.
Harbaugh’s done a great job, but it’s not like the Gators put up any kind of fight yesterday. McElwain clearly didn’t even care about this game, even told his players that were leaving for the NFL to take a few days off.
I’m afraid the Gators have another Muschamp on their hands.
As my second favorite Presidential candidate would say, “the Iowa Hawkeyes got ‘schlonged’”!
That system worked better than this. The big problem is they just aren’t serious about using the bowl games as a real playoffs. The original BCS didn’t use the bowls in a series to determine a champion. And now they’ve finally put in a playoff but it’s still a joke, there’s 128 Div 1 football teams and they only pick 4 for the playoffs. Meanwhile there were 3 weeks with no NCAA football and another week of barely above 500 (and some not) playing in completely ignorable bowl games. With the time between the end of the season and the championship there’s simply no reason not have a 16 teams playoff, actually use the bowls as a series, give good teams more games, jettison a bunch of the mid-range teams. These half assed gestures are an insult to the fans and fail to use the tools at hand to address any of the issues people had with the system.
Complete horse hockey excuse mongering by the NCAA. Div 2 and 3 use playoffs in that same window, if the schools that actually care about educating students can pull it off so can the factories ruled by the athletics department.
Even farther back in the thirties, there were games played between college all-stars and professional teams. It’s an interesting story. The all-star teams were racially integrated, but the pro-teams were not. Unsurprisingly many of the games were shutouts by the pros.

“Maybe introduce an element of debt reduction, for passing.”
Yes, we need more graft and fraud.
Good for him. I’m almost that old and have similar habits.
Being old is another country.
I would agree.
I am happy to see Eddie Mac’s boy do well. Ed McCaffrey
is one of my all-time favorite Broncos and he currently does color on Bronco game radio broadcasts.
That would be 60 minutes. There’s actually a clock that counts it.
And Max McCaffrey at Duke is a good receiver too...though not as good a player as Christian of course. And Billy McCaffrey was a key player on Duke’s first natty championship in bball.
I’ve only seen Phyllis once....but I’ve no doubt she’d be a Trumpanzee. And by that, I don’t mean a Trump supporter, I mean one “of those” kind of Trump supporters.
All Trumpanzees are Trump supporters, but not all Trump supporters are trumpanzees.....
Interestingly, ESPN did not note the other thing they learned. The rating for the two playoff games on NYE were about a 9, down from 15 last year.
I suspect the playoff games won’t be on NYE ever again.
Snap to whistle. Actual game action.
