DAVIE COUNTY, N.C. â Pertussis â commonly known as whooping cough â is a serious bacteria. It causes spasms of severe coughing, which can cause those who have it to vomit and lose breath. In the worst cases, it can be deadly. In recent weeks, it made its way to two schools in Davie County.
The first case was reported on December 7. Today, the school system reported 13 confirmed cases, 11 in Davie High School, and two in the early college.
--snip--
The spread of whooping cough is most easily prevented by receiving the DTaP shot. However â and this is particularly troubling â all 13 of the people confirmed to have Pertussis had gotten the vaccine.

This, from the article, indicates the danger of not being vaccinated.:
From 2000 through 2014, there were 277 deaths from whooping cough reported in the United States, according to the CDC. Almost all of the deaths (241 of the 277) were babies younger than 3 months of age, who are too young to be protected against whooping cough by getting the shots.
But, an updated vaccine is needed as some strains are pertactin-deficient. http://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/pertactin-neg-strain.html
“I had never received such a wrath as of those from anti vaccine Freepers. They are a vicious bunch.”
I have noticed the same thing, and they are almost always women.
“...As for adults, any time you get a ‘tetanus shot’, it’s now a TDaP complete with pertussis as well.”

There you go again, using fancy/dancy words (pertussis) instead of the words (whooping cough) we peasants use. :^)
Under Obama, we also share the world’s diseases.
Allergic reactions to vaccinations can happen on occasion. A friend’s blood pressure went to 0 after a tetanus shot, but was saved with an adrenalin shot to the heart. He was conscious throughout the process and said that he didn’t want to do it again. Have since heard stories of others expiring after administration of shots. One, a little hard to believe, a young lady, who the doctor refused to treat after she had left the office and returned with bad symptoms, the other, a big, strong fireman who got his vaccination at some public venue with no physician present.
Check the incidence of side effects and their severity and compare with the death rate of non vaccinated.
Close the border.
I got whooping cough in mid October and am now at the tail end of it. The symptoms can go on for months.
From what I found out is anti- biotics will kill the bacteria (this is not a virus caused problem )
However killing the bacteria may not reduce the symptoms after the bacteria is gone either by antibiotics or leaves naturally.
Early on I had some coughs that when I tried to get air back into my lungs I made a sound that I never had heard in my entire life.
I know persons who have had it and did a job on their diaphragms with violent coughing- so far I have been lucky and it is abating the last week.
Probably I picked it up because recent other medication has lowered my immune system response. -Tom
You’re correct. They get revaxed around 5 and then again around 12. With immunity lasting only 3 or so years this still could mean that by the upper years of high school the are no longer covered by the vaccine if they follow the CDC recommendations.
So your solution would be to vax everybody with TDaP every 2-3 years for the rest of their lives?
Read the comment I posted just under my comment to you about how overvaccination has led to resistant strains. Just like overuse of antibiotics.
If it is treatable with antibiotics as the article says, why risk siesures and death with a vaccination? I think the pharmaceutical industry is out of control.
No, I’m really not a proponent of vaccination, nor am I an anti-vaxxer. I was just pointing out the known, but not really well published, effective period of the vaccine. I think vaccine proponents do a horrible job of informing people about all the pros and cons of vaccination. And while I think it’s exceedingly horrible and sad, I’m not going to get worked up over 18 deaths per year and call for mandatory vaccinations like some people do.
You’d be surprised at the number of people who want mandatory vaccination for every vaccine for every person on an ongoing basis ever 3-5 years.
My objection is simple. Any time you ‘control’ a disease by selecting this or that particular strain for elimination you simply select for all the rest of the strains preferentially. Resistant strains will outrun you every single time.
Sorry, but I’m not going to get worked up over 20 deaths per year from a disease. It’s horrible that those people died. But I will not jump on the mandatory vaccine bandwagon. Just like the measles “outbreak” early in the year. If you look at the historic death rates from both the disease and the vaccine they are both exceedingly low. Life is about choices that are yours to make and no one else’s.
No, I wouldn’t be surprised. I have done selective immunizations with my little one. I declined the MMR until later date and the physician started telling me how I really needed to get it and how they’re seeing even people who have been vaccinated getting the disease. Really. Tried to talk me into doing it right then instead of later by telling me that even vaccinated people were getting sick. I sensed toward the end of her telling me this that she realized what she was saying, but it didn’t stop her.
The delightful thing with measles and those of us born after 65 is this. We’re not immune to measles in all likelihood. Sooner or later we’ll be forced to take the MMR (or whatever multivax combo shot is out then) every 3-5 years. Indefinitely. The happy bit begins when we hit our 60’s. Oldsters don’t respond to immunization like younger people. Older immune systems just don’t have the brains to respond like 20 somethings. So, in all likelihood we’ll be getting measles at 70. Wonder what the mortality and morbidity is with that...and will we actually get medical care for it. You know, being 70 and all...
She has a good explanation of how pertussis makes you sick and how to treat it with Vitamin C.

I need to order her book. I’ve read bits and pieces of a friend of mine’s book.
Only if you have a set of bacteria, call it pathogen Pi, i= 1... n that are similar except that they differ with property i AND that the organism that is infected always are infected by one or more pathogens of type Pi. Then if you take away a specific pathogen with property k say, either by vaccination or a very specific antibiotic that kills all “k” then the k-resistant strains (= all others) will take their place, if they can survive the competition from other bacteria, and not only of type Pi.
But, this is not how it works, you are not always infected. So the objection is not valid. Hoverer it is valid if you have a test tube and are growing all types of Pi, then if you eliminate a certain Pk its place will be taken by the other Pi with i not equal to k.
they are nuts...when I was a kid, if someeone in the house had measles, the city of Milwaukee posted a sign on your house putting you under quarantine. Iron lungs were pictured in sanatoriums full of people with polio, we couldn't play outside in the summer for fear of polio....Vaccines changed all that and their worth is beyond belief.
