Thanks for the info. Can you explain why stormtrooper armor appears to actually draw blaster fire and apparently offers zero protection? Has anyone ever explained that?

Yes, because it’s in the script! Actually, the answer about why it provides seemingly no protection from blaster fire is that it wasn’t designed to stop all possible blaster fire. It was to provide protection from bladed weapons, gas weapons, projectiles, etc. It is supposed to be effective against some blasters, but not all:
