Electric Light Orchestra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) are a British rock group from Birmingham, England. They were formed to accommodate Roy Wood's and Jeff Lynne's desire to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones. After Wood's departure following the band's debut record, Lynne wrote and arranged all of the group's original compositions and produced every album. In 2012, Lynne reformed the band under the moniker Jeff Lynne's ELO.

Despite early singles' success in the United Kingdom, the band was initially more successful in the United States, where they were billed as "The English guys with the big fiddles".[5] They gained a cult following notwithstanding initial lukewarm reviews in their native UK. By the mid-1970s, they had become one of the biggest-selling acts in music. From 1972 to 1986, ELO accumulated 27 Top-40 hit singles in both the UK and the US, with 20 Top 20 UK singles and 15 Top-20 US singles. The band also holds the record for having the most Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hits, 20, of any group in United States chart history without ever having a number one single.[6][7] The band's only #1 single on a US chart of any significance was "Shine a Little Love" in 1979 on Radio & Records.[8][9]

ELO collected 19 CRIA, 21 RIAA and 38 BPI awards,[10][11] and sold over 50 million records worldwide during the group's original 13-year period of active recording and touring.[12]

Out of the Blue (Electric Light Orchestra album)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Out of the Blue is the seventh studio album by the British rock group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), released in October 1977. Written and produced by ELO frontman Jeff Lynne, the double album is among the most commercially successful records in the group's history.

Recording

Jeff Lynne wrote the entire album in three and a half weeks after a sudden burst of creativity while hidden away in his rented chalet in the Swiss Alps. It took a further two months to record in Munich. Side three of the original double LP consisted of the symphonic Concerto for a Rainy Day, composed of four separate tracks which together made up a cohesive suite, instead of one continuous track. The inclement weather effects heard on "Concerto" were real and recorded by Lynne during a very rainy summer in Munich 1977. The Concerto suite would be Lynne's last dabbling in symphonic rock.

Jeff Lynne wrote a ton of songs, many of which were
damned good. I’d love to have a chat-up with him and
Bob Gaudio (Four Seasons/Frankie Valli) to learn how
they approached their craft.

Outstanding album. I love ELO. OOTB is probably their best work of music but I prefer “Time” as an album for sheer enjoyment.

Them and Hall and Oates are among my least favorite artists of that period. There were so many better groups, IMO.

Both Out of the Blue and New World Record are etched in my mind. Absolutely fantastic music. Lynn is a musical genius. You could count on one hand the number of musical peers he has.

Yeah - their live album done in Australia (can’t think of the title) shows how great they were on stage. Sliding from ‘Rockaria’ into their cover of ‘Roll over Beethoven’ is killer.

New album is out, soon! If you’re on FB, be sure to attach to the Jeff Lynne-ELO page as he’s sharing his new releases as soon as they’re done!

fond memories of listening to New World Record on 8-track while cruising the town with high-school buddies. The song that has a police siren in it always made us jump though - it quickly snaps a guilty conscience back to attention.

Agreed. I recall that Lynne grew up with a tape recorder so he could get feedback on his songs.

Give me three and a half weeks in a Swiss chalet and I’ll come up with an album too.

Maybe not as good as Out of the Blue, but hey!

Some guy novelized the story. It’s supposed to be incredibly good. I keep putting off getting it but I am going to

I’m a sucker for concept albums and Time is the best of them IMO.
