GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) There is a new battle of BBQ and this one deals with which style is healthiest.
Insurance company Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) took a look.
A post compared the Eastern style to the Western style.
The Eastern style comes out on top when it comes to being healthier.
BCBSNC says it is because the Western take on BBQ requires a bit more attention and more flavorings meaning more fat and sodium.
It tipped the scales to the East too because the whole pig is used and not just dark meat on the pork shoulder.
BCBSNC says pick the Eastern style for your heart and cholesterol health.
thanks for the comment....and now they've changed his schedule around...much earlier in the day - he and I are trying to see when we can do it now. Bill and I get along great. He's a super guy - I really like him.
Is this Kings in Kinston? I didn’t know they were a chain.
or Cheerwine
To quote Lewis Grizzard in his Opus on The Best Barbecue in the World, "North Carolina barbecue is not in the running in this contest. In North Carolina, they are so ashamed of their barbecue that they have to hide it under slaw!"
He went on to add that Texas barbecue was even further out of the running because "REAL Barbecue is PORK! In Texas, they'll barbecue ANYTHING: steers, goats, 'possum, armadillo..."
[the Best Barbecue in the World comes from Fresh Air Barbecue on Ga Hwy 42, just south of Jackson.]
Back in the 80s, my dad brought some BBQ from a place called Speedy’s I think from somewhere in eastern NC I think. It was excellent.
EASTERN.
Yep...He’s on in the mornings now...He is pretty sharp...Even if he is from..Ughhhh...Up North...;0)
We should just enjoy all the kinds of unhealthy BBQ and let God sort us out later. ;-)
they have a few satellite stores....or used to. At least, the logo is EXACTLY the same.
Now maybe they have closed em down. There was one in Swansboro that was the nastiest food I’ve ever seen. But that was a number of years ago.
Lewis Grizzard was a very good and funny writer...But, evidently, his taste buds were a little off kilter....*L*
Yes, it is in Kinston. I am from Wilmington, but my Grands lived in Kinston.
In 2008, I ran for WV State Senate, and they shipped me 20" of BBQ, saw and hushpuppies by FEDEX, at no cost. It was not expected, but grateful to them for the help. I was running against the strongest WV Senator at the time. I lost, but scored well.
I have had better, I have had worse, but I always go back to them because they make good PIG! They only have the three stores in Kinston, and one is Snow Hill!
He is sharp.....and very funny off air. He likes to laugh too.
When I’m in studio, we laugh the entire time during the commercials. Some of our best stuff is during the breaks.....I told him we need to start recording that stuff.
Also, he and his wife just adopted a child....in trouble. He’s gonna be daddying well into his sunset years. Total respect for the guy.
I googled Ridgewood Barbecue and found their facebook page. looks like a great place and I will definately try it the next time I’m in Johnson City.
Funny the first facebook comment was pertinent to this thread:
* Great smokey flavor in the Great Smoky Mountains with scrumptious sauce. Great service and a great break from the greasy, vinegary, chopped like confetti stuff that they serve in Eastern NC. We left full, too! Five stars!*
Just trying to stir the pot a bit. ;)
If I remember correctly, Grizzard made fun of NC BBQ due to the slaw.....which is ironic, because Atlanta bbq is almost identical.
I like the mustard/vinegar sauce. Is that eastern? Here in VA, they usually give you your choice of sauces - tomato based (which they say is VA sauce) or vinegar based which they say is NC. But I don’t think that’s an accurate description of the origin of the sauces.
We’ve had terrific BBQ in Florida as well. Whenever we check into an RV park in FL, we ask around about where the best BBQ joint is and we’ve not been disappointed.
Bill Ellis BBQ in Wilson is BUFFET!!!! All you can eat!!!!!!!!!!!!
THAT is special....
Also, the banana puddin’ is fantastic....
There are plenty of arguments over who has the best brisket.
