Our ancestors died from bacterial diseases rather than degenerative diseases. They had no anti-biotics. Heck, just 100 years ago, leading cause of death was Pneumonia.
And they had no means to survive a swallowed bone lodged in their gut, or other such accidents and non-degenerative disorders such as appendicitis.
But they were unlikely to die from heart attacks, high blood pressure (which destroys kidneys) or Diabetes. And they had no weapons to protect from big cats.
