A recent news item noted that a start-up egg-free-mayonnaise company is now selling more of its Just Mayo product in Wal-Mart than in Whole Foods. It's an example of how the free market fuels innovation to meet consumer needs, even if it's a lowly sandwich spread.
So why was the federal government trying to strangle Just Mayo in its cradle?

If it doesn’t have eggs, it’s not Mayo, just like corn syrup and red dye isn’t ketchup. Margarine isn’t butter. Call it something else.
A typical dodge in such a situation is to label the product “Mayonnaise style dressing.” Don’t know what JM uses as a name.

Replace “Just Mayo” with ‘The TEA Party”, the “American Egg Council”
with “Lois Lerner” and “USDA” with the Obama and you would
get the same story but a totally different outcome.
Looks like a bunch of weasel worded lies... not on the part of Just Mayo but on the part of the accusers.
It testifies, at the most, to the byzantine nature of modern regulations. If it has no cholesterol by formulation, you still can’t call it cholesterol free (maybe you can if you had it tested at a cost of whatever baksheesh and then showed that on your label).

It’s been a long time since I was in the business but I believe that a product like this would be called a sandwich spread, which is somewhat ill defined.
They claim heart healthy, but have too much fat to make that claim legal. It is not Mayo, it is a Mayo substitute.
Vegans don’t get the right to make false claims, any more than any other food labels.

It's essential to its nature. It's in the dictionary definition.
This is true, there are such rules, some sillier than others (which is also why there have been brouhahas over Swiss cheese whose holes are not large enough).
Still. If nobody has defined the word Mayo, then it’s open for use in a trademark on a “sandwich spread.” (I bet it would make fair salads, though.) I’d expect Kraft with their “Mayo” mayonnaise would be complaining about trademark issues.
Has anyone officially defined “Mayo.” When you are in regulation city, you live by the regulation definition, you die by it too.
Mayo has eggs, plus they have an image of an egg on the label. It appears misleading to me.
Also take into mind the modifier “Just” which means, in a vegan view, what would happen if the “injustice” of eggs were removed from the “Mayo” concept. This is trickier, it is a free speech issue in the vein of classical free speech issues.
Oddly enough, the idea that low fat means heart healthy is an invention of a line of politicized nutritionism. It really ought not to even be in currency unless the science is so good it is undeniable.

It is. Mayo is universally accepted as a synonym for mayonnaise.

Again if you are going to argue what’s in the food code, then if they do not spell out that Mayo is mayonnaise, and furthermore that it can not be a subject of an adjective that suggests a revision of the concept...
This sounds like a matter of some technical adjustments at worst. If we can have I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter margarine, why can’t we have a Justice to Mayonnaise egg free sandwich spread. Also there is now a provision (for health’s sake) for “fat free” and “low fat” mayonnaise dressings.
