These poor “educators”. Obviously, they need more money to solve this problem. So, Detroiters, send them double your property taxes. Don’t hold back. For the children...
What is a house going for these days in Detroit? — 5 bucks?
I'm a veteran inner-city public high school teacher. Suppose you took a poll of my colleagues, asking them this question: What do you need to make this school work?
I'm sure "more money" wouldn't even be in the top three answers.
The top three answers would be:
1. The ability to permanently remove disruptive students from the classroom.
2. The ability to modify the canned curriculum to fit the needs of individual students.
3. The ability to fail students who deserve it, without fear of retribution from administrators.
My own list would also include meaningful study halls, and honors classes that are truly honors classes.
But you are right about one thing. if you polled central administrators, their #1 answer (and probably their only answer) would be "more money".
There are over 20 administrators for each teacher. The teachers are as much pawns in this game as the students.
