According to Ministry of Justice data, it accepted just 11 asylum seekers out of a record 5,000 applications last year . . . The most common reason for rejecting applications is "unlikely to be self-sustainable or happy in Japanese society." Now, why can't we do likewise?
Even during the salad days of immigration during the Ellis Island era, we rejected many would-be immigrants for nearly identical reasons though, I believe, the exact wording was "likely to become wards of the state or held values incompatible with the ideals of Americans." Yes, that meant that we rejected self-identified Communists.
