It may also be an outgrowth of the onling slang of referring to photos of any physical object of mass interest (like watches, guns, collectibles etc.) as “porn”. That’s where I’ve seen it used most.
I can remember when I was a 12 year old boy scout, it was 1964, and we were collecting old newspapers for a paper drive. Someone through out about a dozen copies Playboy. We though we had died and went to young boy heaven.

Had the experience of the one and two holers myself. Growing up we had indoor plumbing in the state of Texas. Dad, from North Dakota farmland had family up there we visited every year. Aunts/uncles on the farm and some continued to have nothing but. There were a few who did have indoor plumbing and of course those were the ones we children would want to visit and spend the night. One thing about Texas cooking compared to the cuisine of N.D. Down here nothing but margarine used. Up there cream, butter, and rich, rich food. It was there where I would become sick as a dog. And it’s an unpleasant experience with the need to make an OH visit in the middle of the night repeatedly. Fondly remember the hand pump in the middle of the kitchen sink in my Aunt’s home. And the joy when my uncle would allow us youngns a ride on his tractor as he plowed the field. We were always ready to carry his lunch from kitchen to field just to ride on the tractor. And breakfast. N.D. cooks ALWAYS served a sweet for breakfast. Cookies,strudel, etc. As Kids, breakfast would always be a treat. Those were the days remembered fondly..with the exception being those sick hours, of course.

I remember the cartoons of Shel Silverstein showing how they first conceived the idea for PLAYBOY, from jokes about assembling it on a kitchen table with ketchup and mayo stains on it, to Hefner’s problem of what to put in the centerfold.. “A car? A plane? A gun?...what?”
How true! I was discussing Herman Melville’s book about Ahab and the White Whale and found I could not use the title.
In the olden days there were other magazines available like MEN, MALE, STAG, REAL MEN with adventure stories and a section of big breasted “cheesecake”.
I remember going to the drugstore to pick up the evening newspaper and being educated while cruising the magazine isles in 1959. There were plenty of nudie magazines on the rack other than Playboy.
In the late 1970s the homo industry started making inroads on them with titles like MANLEY MEN! The real men’s magazines then ceased publication rather than be mistaken for a fag mag. I do miss those paintings by Mort Kunstler.
Well, for someone not connected to the internet, there are plenty of hard core pornographic magazines still available. There are numerous ones to which one can subscribe and get the magazine delivered by snail mail. There are places such as liquor stores which openly sell hard core pornography.
And then there are places with pornography stores, peep shows, etc. which have all of the explicit pornography one could imagine.
