Well this came out of nowhere. After years of pleading from PC enthusiasts, Microsoft finally revealed an ultra-premium Surface laptop, dubbed Surface Book, at its hardware event on Tuesdaya portable PC designed to embrace Windows 10s most cutting-edge features, and one thats just oozing style.
If the Surface Pro is a tablet that can replace your laptop, as Microsofts marketing crowed last year, does that make the Surface laptop a laptop that can replace your tablet that replaces your laptop?
Not quite. Both aim for different targets. While the Surface tablets were initially introduced to highlight the sort of mobile 2-in-1 experiences possible with the touch-friendly Windows 8, the 13.5-inch Surface Book showcases what traditional PC makers can achieve with Windows 10.
What if we can do for laptops what we did for tablets? Microsoft device chief Panos Panay wondered aloud on stage. We made the ultimate laptop. We made the Surface Book.

I watched the streaming MS Devices event live and was impressed at this as well as the Surface Pro 4. HaloLens, XBox One with W10, 2 new Lumia phones, Continueum and more covered.
W10 after 10 weeks has 110+ active users.
It was amazing...I thought the hinge was odd at first...but then when they removed the screen I realized that’s why it was designed like that.
Simply amazing! Microsoft has some swagger back.
Thinking about getting one...heard good things
Wow, that's ELEVEN per week !
Way to go, MS !
;-)
I’ve used the Lenovo Yoga that has a similar hinge (but is not detachable).
One of the drawbacks to that hinge is is when you bend the screen all the way back to use it as a tablet, it leaves a gap in the back, so when you use the touchscreen, the screen actually bends a little from the pressure. I’m not sure if that will lead to problems in the long run, but it’s something I would watch out for.
Yup I thought the same thing about the hinge until it electronically detached. I am also impressed by the pen WITH ERASER, 1024 degrees of pressure, interchangeable tips, magnetic holder and one year battery.
If you saw the Staff app where the guy was composing music it was amazing.
I need a new machine to replace my old desktop. This could be my first laptop not counting mrs p6’s HP.
Yeah, I can’t type on mrs p6’s laptop, LOL!
SHOULD HAVE BEEN 110+ MILLION in 10 weeks.
MSFT 46.87 +.025 (+0.54%)
Take that 11/wk and buy buy buy!! :)
Ok...I’m stupid. What’s the difference between a tablet and a laptop?
On this device you can’t bend the hinge all the way back. To turn it into a clipboard, as opposed to tablet, you detach then reattach it so it covers the keyboard. At 1 and a half pounds easy to carry.Still unknown is battery life, IIRC they said 12 hours, and pricing. The base price with an i5, 128g SSD and I think 8g memory it was $1499. Most will come with an i7, bigger drive and more memory.
Available by the end of the month I think, pre order in a couple of days,
Tablet is a slate like (solid one piece no hinge). A laptop has an attached keyboard and folds.
up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage!
Pre-order starts tomorrow.
Thanks.
I bought a Yoga for my wife some time back. Windows 8 sucked big time.
BTW: Surface Pro is called the tablet that can replace your laptop. It’s primarily a tablet, but it has a skinny detachable keyboard.
The surface book is primarily used as a laptop where the screen can come off. But when you take the screen off it loses some of its power because the GPU (graphics card) is in the keyboard of the surface book. I’m not sure how battery life is in the surface book when in “tablet” mode.
Technically nothing other than size. With a larger size you can pack in more graphics, ports, battery, cooling, and a much better keyboard. With better cooling you can run your processor(cpu/graphics) harder longer.
Be very careful. I purchased a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro a year ago. Core i7 with 8 meg ram and 500 gig SSD, The thing is light and blazingly fast! I love it.
One day I was opening the lid and I heard a TICK and all of the sudden things started jumping around on my screen like I was dancing my fingers across. The digitizer cracked from one hinge to the opposite corner. Lenovo wouldn’t cover it under warranty so finally I relented and they said $600 to repair. Then they didn’t have the part to repair it and suggested I contact their certified service partners Radio Shack, Best Buy or EBay. Yep they suggested Ebay as a service partner.
I was incredulous and said really... I am going to surf ebay to find a broken down Yoga to fix the screen on my $1400 laptop? They said yep. So eventually I found a place called 365laptoprepair.com out of California. They have the part for $349 and will install it for $50. I got them to fix it and it is like new.
I still love my Yoga but I am really careful with it and will never buy another Lenovo product...
Surface Pro 4 has those two specs also. The big advantage to a SP4, you can throw it further when it pisses you off.
