It would take a team of 1,356 developers over 30 years to recreate the code base in these projects.

But, if we have 488,160 developers, we could do it all in one month.

Linux and tools/apps has evolved to the point it is now my O/S of choice for the home desktop.

I met Linus back then. We were using SCO, etc.

Linux has been very very good to me.

Started with Slackware, compiled my own kernel, good stuff back in the day!

I thought that it being a "kernel" meant that it wasn't that big. It was able to do all the basic stuff that an OS needed to do in a very small package.

Now they're proud that the kernel has become a cornfield and probably more hackable.

Linus has said repeatedly that the kernel will continue on just fine without him. To me though this is the real unanswered question. Linus delegates a lot to his “lieutenants” to be sure but at the end of the day he has the authority and the clout and the aesthetic sense to keep everyone not only on the same (kernel) page but also doing things in a way that is not “stupid”. Would things go as well absent Linus? I say nobody really knows.
