A friend of mine - via Facebook - is arguing that Trump's wall is a pipedream that won't work because of myriad underground tunnels that are dug so deep they are undetectable by GPR . I Googled but couldn't find any current info to use to refute his claim . Anybody here hip to how Trump's wall COULD work ?
I’m not giving them anything.
I had a meeting with two BP Agents and the said that the double fence with the road in between was working in San Diego sector. It is not possible to build that type of fence in mountain terrain. Equally import to them was better roads along the border for faster vehicle response. They noted that activity in the Tucson sector was down with some fencing and trebling of Agents. As a result Texas border is now the hottest spot. The BP has program tone form citizens and show them border features. Enquire at you regions BP Office. They answered most of our questions.
Oh, please. Israel has walls (er, fences) and they work. The Hungarians have just put up fences and they are working. If you go to Europe you will see myriad walled cities from centuries ago and they worked. It’s not a total solution as you point out. Remember: our enemies want in and it’s not because they want to make a living here. That’s why we need barriers.
The Border Patrol says 40% of the border is secure, leaving 60% wide open.
A fence/wall would change those percentages.
Yes, we need to get rid of the incentives but in the meantime we can reduce the number who enter.
Ask Israel if a fence/wall works.
Heard about a suicide bombing in Israel lately?
I have to agree the proposed wall will not stop all of the illegals or all the drugs, but it will sure as hell make a large dent in both. I did not see anything in Trump’s or Carson’s or anyone’s proposal that eliminated the Border patrol, so I guess they will still have work to do.
By the way, for all you naysayers about the wall, check the success of the wall in the Yuma sector. I have heard a reduction of illegals and drug smuggling of 75% to a high of 90%. I would call that a success.
I am 120% behind a wall and boots on the ground, shoulder to shoulder, fully armed soldiers with live bullets and orderer to shoot. But the tunnels do appear to be something of a problem. Understand that they are very, very deep, quite sophisticated in their construction with outlets in parking lots, under bathrooms, in vacant buildings, etc. throughout the U.S. side of the border. There also does not appear to be any current technology that can locate them at that depth.
Would think that someone could come up with technology to locate them so they could be destroyed. Or we may, indeed, have to create another Grand canyon the entire length of the border. Dynamite is certainly cheap and effective and it would be a great tourist attraction.
Sure, there are tunnels, but they are mainly used for smuggling drugs.
Most of the migrants just walk across the border, because with no enforcement, there is no need to resort to elaborate stuff like tunnels.
we would not have to build a wall if we took away incentives
JAIL anyone who hires illegals.
STOP welfare payments to non-citizens
Problem solved
1)Build the road between the double wall first.
2)Locate and mark as many existing tunnels as possible.
3)Drag a deep penetrating GPR (ground penetrating radar) sled behind a truck along the road and map the earth beneath the road.
4) With the GPR data and the existing tunnel data create a baseline underground topography
5) Build the double wall
6) Every month recon the road between the wall with the GPR sled and compare it against the initial baseline taken before the wall was built. The recon / comparison could be done in real time.
2000 miles of no wall is better than a few tunnels which can be easily detected and made unusable with a simple explosive device? So illogical, so wrong, and so prejudiced against the Wall.
Why do you think Israel built a wall to keep Palestinian terrorists out? Why did China built a 13,000 mile long wall?
The problem for tunnel diggers is that it is VERY DIFFICULT to conceal the smuggling of PEOPLE, as opposed to the smuggling of DRUGS.
Theoretically, it is possible to smuggle humans through tunnels, but the payoff is small (100 kilos of pot, or coke, is worth a lot more than 100 kilos of Jose)...so they do not smuggle humans...rather only drugs.
A wall is only effective if someone is not allowed to be on the other side of it. As long as illegals can have anchor babies, and get drivers licenses, free healthcare and jobs your fence won’t stop them from coming. As long as we are handing out asylum to terrorists, a fence won’t do much to stop them either.
Government is always looking for something that they can appear to be doing instead of fixing the problems they made for us themselves. Everyone has been talking about this wall for years and it’s just your typical government “just do something it doesn’t matter if it works” solution.
Drug smugglers, bring in Billions of dollars worth of dope. They do not require jobs and require no welfare. So your idea is in-effective.
It would work. Not absolutely but, it would stem the tide to a trickle.
Then they could come through the front door all they want, for all I care...
Wall + Border agents.
Combined the effectiveness increases 10x at least. You think walls suck? Go ask Israel.
Tunnels can only be built in certain areas. Namely, the populated areas.
The tunnels are built for smuggling drugs in, and spies in and out, and soon active terrorists in the U.S.
The drug tunnels are difficult because there so much money involved. It’s lucrative for Law enforcement and politicians alike. They aren’t going to be smuggling people out of those tunnels ... except for maybe very very high paying customers.
A well patrolled fence line is all we really need. I would put up a double fence 15’, 15’ apart and topped with barbed wire and the gap filled with concertina wire and motion sensors.
The present anchor babies will, of course, bring in the families. But to start building a wall in, let’s say, 2017, will help stop the anchor babies. But, of course, there is more to this than walls - as people have pointed out. It is only a start.
For every fortress, there will always be a way to get through the defenses.
The wall has been built in pieces over a period of decades already - and it has had dramatic impacts, shifting illegal immigration to places where the wall hasn’t been built yet. That alone is evidence that a wall has some effectiveness.
But more than a wall, what Trump can use executive authority in a variety of ways to eliminate sanctuary cities and punish employers who hire illegals. With even just a little bit of will, most illegal immigration can be stopped.
the MAJORITY of the 30 million are not drug dealers
Because SOME are drug dealers we should continue to let people hire illegals and continue to give them welfare?
Tax 90% of the money they ship home too.
What makes a tunnel a success is limited transit. If multitudes of people keep mysteriously appearing at a site, then that would be a give-away. Plus, it is choke point. Tunnels are for drugs, not people.
“A wall is only effective if someone is not allowed to be on the other side of it. As long as illegals can have anchor babies, and get drivers licenses, free healthcare and jobs your fence wont stop them from coming.”
It will stop enough moochers and terrorists to make it worth building, along with taking away the gravy train.
