Does anyone know how to make a great hamburger or cheeseburger?

My late wife could make a fairly good one but I simply can’t seem to do it. I buy premium meat, fresh buns, fresh tomatoes, American cheese, good dill pickles, etc. but I can’t seem to quite make a really good one.

Spend a month eating the Double Cheeseburger off the McDonald’s value menu. After that, ANY burger you make at home will taste fantastic.

In-N-Out, if you're in California. Good fast food burgers. I've also heard Five Guys does it right.

Or head to the grocery store, buy some frozen Ball Park burger patties, microwave for a couple of minutes and throw them on Martin's burger buns - very decent quality and taste. Try them before you knock it - if you don't want to make your own burgers from scratch, these are far better than anything you'll get from a McDonald's.

Skip the premium meat and get an 80/20 ground chuck. The burger needs fat for flavor.

Make a uniform patty about 3/8” thick. Season with salt, pepper and garlic. don’t be shy with the seasoning. Grill on medium high heat. Cheese goes on a minute after you’ve flipped it for the first and only time.

Keep a beer handy to sprinkle on flames if it gets out of control.

Toast buttered buns.

A couple of shots of Worchestershire on the tops of the burgers when you put them on the grill adds a nice touch.
