I have brushed my teeth with pure baking soda for years, never did the Clorox part.

You are way ahead of the game. . . and saved all that money on Toothpaste which our main dentist calls handy-dandy sweetened pumice! LOL! The purpose of the Clorox protocol is to get the last few bacteria (spirochetes) that are too tough to be killed by the baking soda protocol. Baking Soda has a five second kill time which may be long enough to allow some of the spirochetes to ball up into what is called the "spore" form. The sodium hypochlorite of the dilute Clorox Dakin's solution has a two second kill time, far too fast for the spirochetes to for their protective ball spore form. . . and even the toughest will be killed. We don't want to breed generation after generation of tough spirochetes!

Whitening: if between cleaning your teeth start to get less white, you can use any over the counter whitening agent. It won’t hurt your teeth. Follow the instructions closely. Some can burn your gums because they use too strong a solution of the whitening agent or the user thinks that if five minutes is good, ten must be better. It isn’t.

Mercury Amalgam. Metallic Mercury can be dangerous, however Amalgam is an alloy. As it erodes from your teeth, which is very slow, remains an alloy. The Amalgam Alloy has been used for over 150 years and nothing in science has shown to be generally dangerous about it. Some people have used anecdotal evidence to claim it’s dangerous to have amalgam fillings by saying that people who have had them removed are healthier. . . however that is a very subjective finding, not objective. In most instances, those who go to the trouble and expense of having a dentist remove the mercury amalgam fillings and replace them with plastic or ceramic fillings have a vested interest in having a good result and will find they feel better due to the placebo effect because of self-fulfilling desire for it to be so. There are ZERO objective findings to back up these “feelings” that they “feel” better. Would it were so we could solve such problems as the aches and pains of growing older by such a simple approach as not having cavities filled with a “dangerous” poisonous metal. . . but it just isn’t.

That’s not to say there are NOT a small minority of people who have a sensitivity to Mercury. Those people do exist, just as there are people who have a sensitivity to Nickel and cannot wear gold jewelry alloyed with Nickel which includes White Gold, or some Sterling Silvers, or even react adversely to handling a five cent coin! However, the percentage of the population with a Mercury allergy or sensitivity is a fraction of 1/10th of one percent. Very, very small. It’s a question on the history we take of all patients about whether they’ve ever had a reaction to eye drops, etc., because many of such drops have a mercury based preservative.

In any case, many studies have been done where people have been questioned about the overall state of their health and the aches and pains they feel. . . and then they are examined for the number and condition of their fillings. There is NO correlation between those aches, pains, health, and whether they have amalgam fillings, plastic fillings, stainless steel fillings (Russian dentists do not use amalgam), or no fillings at all. Ergo, there is little to show any effect one way or the other between the health of an individual and what kind of fillings that was used on his or her teeth if any. So, I wouldn’t worry.

I stopped us using toothpaste of all kinds because it made my mouth hurt. Red, sore and burning. I have used only baking soda for 20+ years.

Hello again Swordmaker,
I have returned.

I am noticing I have had trouble convincing some people that the Dakin’s Solution is safe in the mouth, even at such a low concentration. I explain that Dakin’s Solution has been in use as an antiseptic for decades and is proven safe, but people question whether this can have an adverse effect on the tissue inside the mouth. In most cases they discount this practice entirely. I was wondering if you have any links to any scientific research that has been done on the safety of this solution, or if you have any links that may calm their fears on this.

Hi Swordie, Any update on the bleach?

Incidentally, don't sweat the sodium hydroxide. It's just Na+ OH-. You know like autodissociation of water in to H+ OH-.

Not sure what the pH would be, I'm sure one could look it up or use litmus paper.

Hi Swordie, Any update on the bleach?

Yup. . . We did some checking. There’s no way to buy Clorox in the old formula any more. All versions have buffering chemicals added to them because of the change to "Clorox Concentrate" (now 8.375% NaOH solution to lower Clorox shipping costs by discontinuing the gallon bottle) to keep the stronger dilution longer. The closest one can get to the older pure bleach formula is "Clorox Germicidal" or "Clorox Antimicrobial" which have no scents added to them. They’re unlikely to be found in an average grocery store but might be available in a big-box warehouse, janitorial supply, or medical/hospital supply store.

That being said, we got copies of the ingredient lists with concentrate levels of the additives in the new "Clorox Concentrate" versions and did some calculations on the adulteration levels in the now 24 capfulls of H2O to one capful of Clorox and found that those added ingredients were negligible and at levels that became innocuous.

I’ve been telling people all along that Sodium Hydroxide (Bleach) at these concentrations very quickly changes to mere salt water in just seconds.

Thanks VERY much.

Our dentist is very interested when we told him of Dakin’s solution.
Would you be willing to re-send me the link to the spirochetes & Dakins, or is it in this thread?

I think he’d find that of interest.

Just bought a water pik last weekend, will do Dakin’s & brushing with bicarbonate of soda too.

Thanks & FReegards!

Hey Swordmaker.

Can you verify that the current version of Clorox Germicidal Bleach has not been changed over the last year, and is safe at the dilution you previously recommended?
