Trump, I think, is taking the same approach that Clinton took.
In his run-up to the presidency, the Clinton campaign responded to every negative comment, no matter how trivial. By doing so, the media quickly learned that to criticize Clinton was to invite return fire, so they quickly stopped.
As a result, Clinton was later praised as a savvy campaigner. Trump, of course, is being characterized as thin-skinned.

I am not sure a panel discussion on emasculation occurred in 1992 for Bubba’s first go round. All there was then was the ancient three networks and CNN. And very few people had internet. A much narrower field of news outlets.
