Who Was the Most Appealing Person in the GOP Debate?
News Machete ^ | 9/17/2015 | News Machete

I'll leave coverage of the substance of the GOP debate to others. I want to talk about the style of the participants--who was the best, most appealing speaker?

Chris Christie spoke too quickly, making himself appear nervous. Perhaps he was nervous, because he was on the verge of being eliminated from the grownups debate.

John Kasich has no eyebrows and his face looks partially melted, making himself look like a space alien. He spoke a lot but he didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense.

Carly Fiorina was forceful and articulate. She also looked stern and had this sour look on her face, like a constantly angry schoolmarm. She almost never smiled or had any warmth in her voice.

Ben Carson reminded me of blind David Patterson, the former Governor of New York who was very soft spoken. He talked about important things, but how can you speak with passion about the dangers of a nuclear Iran when you talk in such a soft tone?

Donald Trump was amusing as always and seemed like a character actor. Not exactly Presidential, more like Peter Falk from Columbo.

Ted Cruz was the best. He looked the camera right in the eye, and spoke with a clear, firm voice that had a sense of urgency.

Rand Paul was not great or terrible, but seemed to whine when he talked about drugs.

Scott Walker wasn't bad but he actually spoke the least in the debate. He has this weird way of staring into the camera with one eye but the other is a little off center making it look like he has a glass eye (which he doesn't.)

They showed Mike Huckabee often from a sideview and it wasn't flattering. He looks severely overweight but he did speak with passion. Marco Rubio spoke with a sense of urgency about foreign policy but there also seemed to be a note of desperation in his presentation.

Jeb Bush was definitely higher energy, but he had this weird habit of moving his head when he talked. As he talked at length I saw his head move left and right, right and left, and left and right like windshield wipers. I suppose he was trying to look at all the audience, but when the most important audience was behind a camera his movements seemed weird.

Overall Ted Cruz was the best. Carly had forceful moments but as I said she was not very likeable. Marco and even Jeb had moments too.

I, too wish Cruz would loosen up a little. He is much better in person, actually shows some humor and is great with questions from the audience.

I don’t know how you reconcile Trumps position on illegal immigration with Carson’s:

“Is it moral for us, for example, to take advantage of cheap labor from illegal immigrants while denying them citizenship? I’m sure you can tell from the way I phrased the question that I believe we have taken the moral low road on this issue. Some segments of our economy would virtually collapse without these undocumented workers—we all know that—yet we continue to harass and deport many individuals who are simply seeking a better life for themselves and their families.”

I like Cruz but his delivery was more suited for a courtroom (which isn’t surprising)so he was lacking something that would make a personal connection with the viewers. (warmth?) It was clear to me that the moderators didn’t want him front and center very often, probably so all the low information voters wouldn’t realize his stances are rooted in law and the Constitution and not just demagoguery.

Fiorina was absolutely on target all the time, using language that Joe Sixpack can understand, and very moving when she went after Planned Parenthood. I think someone must have told her that women who show any humor or warmth are dismissed as lightweights.

Overall, from the standpoint of warmth, developing a personal story that was relevant to his point, and mastery of issues, especially foreign policy, I thought Rubio did the best job.

A real debate formate would throw out a problem or policy....

You mean, a real debate consists of give and take on current political issues. both global and domestic? Not three hours of, "Candidate X, Mr. Trump said something mean about you last month. Would you care to comment?"

I'll defer to my wife who has no bias because she has no idea basically who any of them are. She liked Rubio. I have to concur that he did well.

I think she’s drawing the “Stupid” women’s votes. Carley is for almost everything I’m against. She is FOR the Global Warming Myth so would automatically be part and parcel of raising energy costs and all the damage that would do to our economy. She is FOR the “dreamers.’ She is pro amnesty and so on.
As if that isn’t enough, she practically destroyed HP and then couldn’t win a very winnable political race against B.B.
The list is long! She is a LOSER and totally unqualified to be president.

as a angry woman who needs to prove they are somehow tough

Yeah, that's it. I've been trying to put my finger on it.

She'd have been better off just being herself, rather than trying to out-tough the boys on the stage. Unless that really was herself, which isn't good either.

He could have been better prepared. He seemed ill-prepared.

He needs to tighten that up.

Cruz for SCOTUS.

Hmmmmm.... he might do more good there, than as president.

I was thinking AG - after Holder and the current one, there's a lot of cleanup to be done in that house. But Cruz on the SCOTUS is an interesting thought.

Jeb Bush was definitely higher energy, but he had this weird habit of moving his head when he talked. As he talked at length I saw his head move left and right, right and left, and left and right like windshield wipers.

That is because at the last minute Jeb Bush fell ill and was replaced by a Jeb Bush bobble-head doll.

The fact that odd head movements are the ONLY way anyone can tell the difference between a bobble-head doll and the real Jeb Bush tells us everything we need to know about Jeb Bush...

“Until Donald Trump can figure out how to make a single point without a) bragging about himself, and b) taking a shot at someone else then he will remain a clown candidate.”

In other words, according to you, Donald should take the Donald out of Donald. Yeah, right. Advice from a Donald hater is no advice at all.
