I live in a county with about a 75,000 population. Rowan County is at about 23,500. It's not that uncommon even in my county with has a small city and several towns to have family members working in the county court house even in the same office. Usually county clerk, Register of Deeds, etc only has two persons running for office sometimes only one. County Mayor and Sheriff are usually the two big races. County Commissioners are ones you know in your community.

Several families long time active in county government in rural counties often hold offices even multiple generations. Usually this is mainly due to a lack of anyone else seriously wanting the headache of having their life scrutinized weekly by a usually a local newspaper which is often not much more than a gossip publication. Such is politics in a lot of rural counties in the southeast.
