Surprise! Iran says it discovered an unexpectedly high reserve of uranium and will soon begin extracting the radioactive element at a new mine. iran nukes

Democrats just passed Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran this week. Reuters reported:

“ Iran has discovered an unexpectedly high reserve of uranium and will soon begin extracting the radioactive element at a new mine, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation said on Saturday.

The comments cast doubt on previous assessments from some Western analysts who said the country had a low supply and would sooner or later would need to import uranium, the raw material needed for its nuclear program.

Any indication Iran could become more self-sufficient will be closely watched by world powers, which reached a landmark deal with Tehran in July over its program. They had feared the nuclear activities were aimed at acquiring the capability to produce atomic weapons – something denied by Tehran.

“I cannot announce (the level of) Iran’s uranium mine reserves. The important thing is that before aerial prospecting for uranium ores we were not too optimistic, but the new discoveries have made us confident about our reserves,” Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

Salehi said uranium exploration had covered almost two-thirds of Iran and would be complete in the next four years.

Uranium can be used for civilian power production and scientific purposes, but is also a key ingredient in nuclear weapons.

Hmmm - I would have suspected it was part of the 500 tons of yellowcake Saddam had collected over the years, which would have fallen into Iran’s hands on their next invasion of Iraq - except the US and its coalition got to Iraq first in 2003 and sent that uranium to Canada......

Thomas in Fairfax, Virginia, a caller to Rush Friday 11Sep15, said that thorium is preferred to uranium for generation of nuclear power.
Thorium is safer, less expensive, and simpler form of energy generation than uranium reactors.
Thomas said in part to Rush: "... But in the modern world, when someone wants to set up nuclear power, they use thorium now. They don't use uranium. Thorium is many times more efficient, and you can use it on a much smaller footprint. Almost all of the... Virtually all of the new power plants being made throughout the world are thorium. They're not uranium. So given that fact, the fact that the Iranians are using uranium, the only reason they're using it is the only reason anybody used it in the past: For nuclear weapons. Given that information, why are we stuck on stupid with Obama giving into this saying, "Oh, well! They're just doing this because they want power," when we know this? ..."

So when an axis of evil country --- the murderous, crazed, terrorist state of Iran --- is excited about a uranium find it is worrisome.

Somebody needs to get this info to Obozo, pronto.

And the day they made the announcement is the first day after the Islamic weekend (Thursday-Friday).
So they made this announcement the first week day after the deal was essentially unstoppable.

Well, there ARE designs and promotions going around the industry supporting thorium.

But only the Chinese are working on a development/research program using it. Everything else, everywhere else, still uses uranium and light water.

But the Iranians are building centrifuges and enrichment plants to get weapons grade uranium, then plutonium. If they wanted power, they’d build fossil powerplants (gas turbine and fuel oil.).
