When Sadhuram Berwal wanted to get married, his family went about it in the traditional Indian way, asking relatives, neighbors and local temple priests to suggest a young woman. But after an extensive search among women of his caste in his area, no suitable bride could be found.
A larger factor had narrowed the field sharply: a skewed male-female ratio that is particularly pronounced in his home state of Haryana, in India's north, due to sex-selective abortions in a society where many families prize boys over girls, mostly for economic reasons.
Through a friend, Berwal eventually found a woman 2,700 kilometers (1,700 miles) to the south, in the state of Kerala, who was willing to marry him. But with a different language and profoundly different customs, she was overwhelmed by her new life.

The most adult men for every adult woman (ages 15-65) are UAE at 2.74... Qatar has 2.46... Oman 1.38... Bahrain 1.32... Saudi Arabia 1.29... Jordan 1.15... The top 6 are all Muslim.
Greenland is the first significant nation that isn't Middle-Eastern Muslim, also at 1.15... the next significant non-Muslim nation on earth in male-to-female adult ratio is the US, at 1.07. I did not expect that.
Zimbabwe (0.81), Chad (0.85), and Bangladesh (0.89) are the top significant nations with more adult women than men.
Palau and Samoa have a weird population pattern, too. More adult men, but far more elderly women... Samoa (1.26 Adult and 0.45 Elderly) and Palau (1.10 Adult and 0.80 Elderly).
Among Children (<15), there's not much variation in the world. Only 4 (of 228) are below 1.00, and none under 0.96... The world average is 1.07, and only 11 nations (of 228) are over 1.10. None are over 1.17 (China).
