Amen.
What years did you live there?
1976 to 2006. It got too crowded, and it was infested with illegals. I had a good run, and still miss the ocean. The SFV looks like a middle eastern city these days.
RE “...had a long happy life, and was never out of work...”
Sometimes, that’s the best you can hope for. We should all be so lucky.
I agree
Cool, you got to see the good years.
You name one of the reason I left So. Cal, got too crowded. But the mid 70's through the 80's was a great time to live there.
What part of AZ are you in?
My Dad is off of 17 and Carefree Hwy. N Phoenix, visit there often.
I am in Scottsdale. I may be moving to Australia in the near future.
Nice part of town....whew Australia, big change!
Port Stephens, right on the ocean. About an hour from Sydney.
Did a Google search, beautiful!
I’d love to visit, but I don’t think I could leave America....course I thought that about leaving Cali at one time too.
What is the cost of living there?
Food is very reasonable, especially seafood. Real estate is a bargain compared to L.A. Nice 3 bedroom house right on the ocean for $580,000. Off the water, but close in, is 175,000 up. Almost zero crime too. What Malibu might have been like 60-70 years ago.
Sounds like heaven!
Remember, you can still post from Australia!!
Best of luck in whatever happens.
Thanks much!
“David Geffen or Michael Lombardo or Barry Diller would insist on homosexuality infesting it”
There was a lot of homosexuality in the Beat literary world. Not Kerouac as far as I know even though Gore Vidal claimed so, but Ginsberg and Burroughs definitely. And Neal Cassady.
“Naked City. Another ahead of its time show”
I remember liking that series. I’d be curious to see how an episode would look today. Probably can find it on the net somewhere.
It’s hard to tell because Kerouac never admits it but the homosexual Beats which means.....most ....sure want to claim him and offer circumstantial and anecdotal out the wazoo
Cassady was even more ambiguous though he for sure engaged in queer acts
No question
He was the most intriguing to my because of the cultural bridge he represented from Beats to Hippies
An abandoned wastrel exploited by chickenhawks in his youth on the streets
A hustler literally
I think he played Ginsburg for Ginsburgs influence in helping him stay afloat in that weird world
He was married with kids
Kept girlfriends including the infamous Hells Angels voluntary gang bang girl at Keseys La Honda acid test ranchette where Hunter Thompson and Jerry Garcia and I think Virginian Tom Wolf interrupted the proceeding in the garage and wrote about it later
Basically that she was more than the 81s could handle as Cassady watched on cheerleading
A freaky bunch is an understatement
The girl was very pretty too..,, not what folks would think
Cassady gobbled speed and drank like a fish and chain smoker
Even LSD barely phased him
One of those folks you think can’t be killed
Found dead early 40s by railroad tracks in San Miguel Allende Mexico from alcohol overdose and exposure or who knows
Maybe a heart attack
I watched the bus ride tape just released a few months ago on Apple TV
They filmed themselves and Cassady is a hoot to watch
Never sits still and when he dismisses Timothy Leary and gives him the stink eye when the bus visits Millbrook in New York State
It’s priceless
The scene where the bus visits McMurtry in Houston and one of the girls flips out in public is really an odd and troubling juxtaposition of the era
“He was the most intriguing to my because of the cultural bridge he represented from Beats to Hippies”
Yeah that part intrigued me as well. I first heard of Neal Cassady as the Merry Prankster’s bus driver and then was surprised to find that he had been part of the Beat Generation. The model for Dean Moriarty in Kerouac’s On the Road.
A read a piece in some Catholic mag about Kerouac. He had a Catholic French Canadian background and was an unusual mix of conservative and bohemian. Like some other people I know. In later years he would smoke pot and cheer as he watched Richard Nixon speeches on TV.
Emergency!
“including the infamous Hells Angels voluntary gang bang girl “
Mountain Girl says she was Neal Cassady’s girlfriend. Jealous of the presence of Ginsberg and so getting back at Cassady by taking on the Hell’s Angels in his presence. Depravity isn’t confined to the French Quarter.
