They could be reading from the Racing Form for all the congregation knew.

For all the attention modern parishioners pay, a priest could do that in the vernacular and get away with it...

I asked some of my fellow churchgoers repeat the first two lines of the most commonly used Eucharistic Prayer; not only were they not able to do so, they didnt even know at what point in the service the Prayer occurs...so much for the greater access for the Faithful in the vernacular Mass...
