The Jeep Wrangler Pickup Truck is Finally Going to Happen

A pickup truck based on the Jeep Wrangler is under development and should arrive on the market by 2017 or 2018.

According to Automotive News, production of the Wrangler will stay in Toledo, Ohio, which is also where Jeep will be building a new pickup truck based on the Wrangler. The fate of Wrangler production has been up in the air for nearly a year, but today Jeep execs revealed these plans to plant management. They also revealed that production of the Cherokee will be leaving Ohio for a nearby State, likely Michigan or Illinois.

Details on the Jeep Wrangler pickup truck are still unknown, besides the fact that it will be based on the next-generation Wrangler which will use some aluminum parts to cut weight while it will also likely adopt a diesel and or a small turbocharged gasoline motor to get good fuel economy ratings. It is likely that the truck will be a midsize to compete with the new Chevy Colorado along with the redesigned Toyota Tacoma.

A modern Jeep Wrangler pickup was teased back in 2005 with the Gladiator concept (seen above) though that truck was based off the larger Ram 1500 frame.

Having a new pickup to build in Toledo will help to negate the loss of the Cherokee, which is Jeep’s best-selling vehicle. Combined, FCA wants the redesigned 2018 Wrangler along with the pickup to move 350,000 units a year.

So your point is smaller is better for off-road? That may be if you are trying to get between a couple of trees. In that case a Suzuki tracker would be a great off road vehicle.

The wider stance of the FJ provides more stability, especially on slopes, boulder fields, etc. It also gives the passengers more comfort and storage space.

What inaccuracies are you talking about? The engineering? Please go there.

Wide tracks cause directional instability.

They also impede travel between rocks and banks.

Wide track is for decal racers, because decal racers think wheels that stick out are sexually stimulating.

LOL good description. Although in soft sand it’s a useful thing.

“Wide tracks cause directional instability.”

I don’t know about that. I do know a short wheel base causes directional instability , also known as the “death hop”.

I understand your brand loyalty. Chevy/Ford, yada yada. Because I have both vehicles sitting side by side in the driveway, and I do all my own maintenance, I’m familiar with the pros and cons of each. I’m not going to spend 20 minutes of my life that I can’t get back listing them. I’m not here to sell cars.

I’m glad you enjoy your CJ. If you have the chance, drive an FJ and take a close look at it.

Best Regards.

“Wide tracks cause directional instability.”

Nope. Square tire arrangements do. The Ford Bronco was more square than rectangular and had a terrible directional stability issue. Jeep Wranglers have a rectangular arrangement and are very stable.

This is pure physics:

The wider the separation of the driving wheels, the greater the rotating moment generated by a loss of traction on one wheel.

This is why dragsters have close set rear wheels, and wide set front wheels.

They have a very long wheel base. Rectangular.

No, they are essentially triangular, due to the extreme close proximity of the drive wheels.

“Essentially” isn’t the same as “is”. Seems you just like to argue. Bye.

I’m just trying to help you understand the dynamics.

A dragster is more akin to one of the new three wheel motorcycles than to other four wheel vehicles.

I am a physicist. PhD. Thanks, but you destroyed your own argument about outer wheel forces when you claimed the front wheels are intended to provide a single point in a triangle.

I agree. It’s a nice choice for a vehicle. its nice if you’re going to rebuild an old Jeep.

I went back, to that thread to review.

Followed a link to the article about the Jeep pickup (due out in a couple years now) to another article which mentions Jeep is redesigning the Wrangler in a new model, which looks similar to the current model, has some weight reduction, and gets much better gas mileage.

They’re keeping significant portions of the Jeep though, it keeps the hardcore engineering it has.

Thanks for your response.
